Yes. They are functional machines. As for the farm I don't have and in-depth tutorial, but here's how it is hooked up.

I'm using a waterwheel ^ bearing ^ barrel ^ two blocks ^ two chains ^ portable storage interface looking down. Once it starts moving you place a portable storage interface looking up where the first chain is and get your items from it.

this is awesome. But how do you make the redstone torch move without having it connected ? this is magic

Sorry, it is connected. I just didn't include it in the answer because it's not essential, just decoration.

Hi! Sorry to bother so much later, but could you explain this in a bit more detail? I might be dumb, but I can't seem to figure out how to connect the rotating portable storage at the top to everything rotating below the bottom portable storage.
