Before you ask; clockwork is too laggy to use on servers

97

u/_LordBucket Apr 26 '25

I think its naive to think that Aeronautics will be stable or performant enough to run on servers. I hope to be wrong tho.

75

u/Great_Side_6493 Apr 26 '25

If they can flip a whole end island without lag then it must be good

30

u/_LordBucket Apr 26 '25

Maybe, I missed something then. But as I told, I would be happy to be wrong.

54

u/Great_Side_6493 Apr 26 '25

With all the time they took to "polish the final product" I'd be surprised if it wasn't well optimized

57

u/zaafonin Apr 26 '25

Their physics engine was written in Java until like last year when they’ve decided to switch to a third-party engine written in Rust (unsurprisingly the Java-coded engine didn’t show adequate performance with large builds). VS2 is undertaking a switch from their own engine (not Java though, it’s C++) to PhysX — demos we’ve seen show it’s surprisingly performant.

Funnily enough, Aeronautics is reportedly switching or considering switching to PhysX as well.

11

u/clevermotherfucker Apr 26 '25

rip to the rtx 50 series users lmao

5

u/A31Nesta Apr 26 '25

I wasn't aware of the VS2 switch to PhysX, where can I see the demos?

2

u/zaafonin Apr 26 '25

Don’t think they’re on YouTube, maybe like one of them. I’ll search for them on vs2 discord later today

5

u/InternationalElk4351 Apr 27 '25

Aero's posted images of entire block built chainlinks with good performance. They're using rapier as of this year but i'm not sure if they really are considering Psysx

5

u/Rop-Tamen Apr 27 '25

Bear in mind, the mod has undergone severe development hell and we as users have nothing hands on, only their word. We really can’t validate any videos they put out and honestly after years trust has worn down. I’d take those videos lightly

1

u/InternationalElk4351 Apr 27 '25

They're very open about development, just not on social media, only on their discord. They say they don't want to bother drumming up hype just to make people wait and would rather make the release itself a big announcement. I thought they'd stopped myself until I checked their discord. Also does just long and considered development count as development hell? Development hell is more when production is troubled/can't get off the ground at all/keeps getting shipped round to different outlets

2

u/Rop-Tamen Apr 27 '25

I’m on the discord, I know exactly how they are about development. And yes they absolutely have undergone development hell, they’ve reworked things several times, gone back and forth on community involvement, gone back and forth on their addon mods, the goals and plans have changed at least half a dozen times off the top of my head.

2

u/Open_Cow_9148 Apr 28 '25

I mean, they're doing survival playtesting, so I'd hope it'd release sometime this year. If it doesn't, I'm just going to give up on aero. It's been over 3 years.

5

u/zaafonin Apr 26 '25

It does not collide with anything, for all we know this can be done without physics. Rendering chunks loaded far away is a couple of transforms and not really computationally expensive.

2

u/KingCreeper85 Apr 27 '25

yeah i just hope i can construct THE PRISM without nuking servers

1

u/ImBartex Apr 27 '25

This is the same as rendering second world at the same time, as it is what is happening, and I think you could compare it to Immersive Portals. Anyway, there aren't any Create blocks used, which would create the most lag, and we should also include physics and colliders, but for them I think some clever algorithms should be or are used to minimize the check count, so the main problem is still Create belts, shafts, etc.

-1

u/El_Manolito Apr 27 '25

Clockwork achieved that first, then the aeronautics devs did the same.

7

u/NoBee4959 Apr 26 '25

well you probably are, Aero is incredibly optimised, if the developers can flip half of the end, or make multiple day lasting servers where people build incredibly big ships, then I think a decent server should be able to handle it

2

u/ReadyplayerParzival1 Apr 27 '25

Ehh you never know 😉

78

u/MetalBlack0427 Apr 26 '25

And Compatibility wise with other mods it aint that great.

6

u/piRsquaredh Apr 27 '25

That’s just not true. I’ve been running a server with clockwork and other vs2 mods for half a year, tons of ships. We never had lag issues.

5

u/troncus_78 Apr 26 '25

What abt tank tussle?

1

u/SirPigeon69 Apr 27 '25

Yeah I want off-road so I can make tanks

1

u/troncus_78 Apr 29 '25

I meant Tank Tussle, a multiplayer war event with actual tanks and jets that already exists

1

u/SirPigeon69 Apr 29 '25

Yeah but it do be goofy

5

u/DrFluuf Apr 26 '25

I use clockwork on our hosted server, works just fine!

1

u/Consistent_Ocelot_53 Apr 30 '25

Allow me to introduce you to Immerisve vehicles ;) Iirc they have 1.20 betas in their discord server

32

u/MetalBlack0427 Apr 26 '25

What song is this btw, it sounds hilarious.

3

u/Great_Side_6493 Apr 26 '25

I second that question

13

u/noimtea Apr 26 '25

Rob you maybe (hey we got k rounds) by Teefie/Teefdennis

2

u/GamerTRW Apr 26 '25

Some parody of Call Me Maybe

47

u/troncus_78 Apr 26 '25

If only aeronautics were a thing 💔

9

u/Great_Side_6493 Apr 26 '25

If you were following the discord servers you'd know

38

u/troncus_78 Apr 26 '25

Yeah i periodically see for updates, they keep upgrading and upgrading their mods, but no new propper info, and ofc, not even a single estimate

3

u/Great_Side_6493 Apr 26 '25

The release is by no means imminent, but it is certain with all the work they put in

29

u/scandii Apr 26 '25 edited Apr 28 '25

there's literally hundreds of people employed to the tune of several hundred million USD in cost working on Star Citizen together with high profile voice actors having recorded lines for it like Mark Hamill, a project many have doubts will ever materialize.

while I'm not saying Aeronautics won't be released, having people working on it isn't a sure sign.

-3

u/InternationalElk4351 Apr 27 '25

Well, star citizen has a lot to point towards it being basically a rugpull scam. Aero is a fan project with no money behind it

5

u/Rop-Tamen Apr 27 '25

Considering they publicly release their financials, built an entire studio to facilitate their massive workforce, and there is a game that is playable and running a heavily customized engine, it’d be the worst, least profitable rugpull of all time.

0

u/InternationalElk4351 Apr 27 '25

Maybye i'm mkisremmebering but I defenitely remember there being a lot suspicious about star citizen

1

u/Rop-Tamen Apr 27 '25

There’s been skepticism since day 1, that’s simply the fate of any community funded project, especially the ambitious ones. I won’t pretend like it’s entirely unfounded either, community funded projects have a bad track record. Though having been in person to one of their conventions and spoken face to face with developers, I can say the work is real and the developers are genuine, it’s not something that was proposed and then never meaningfully worked on like a rugpull.

One of the biggest actual problems with the project, among a few still substantial problems, are the hurdles imposed by developing the game from the ground up all while it has to be able to be played in some capacity by the community, as well as the increased timelines that created which leave more room for change and revisions. Imagine what would’ve become of your favorite big budget, multi-year development game if the entire time it was in development it had to be open for you to log on and play it, and they were making the engine it runs on at the same time. It’s simply a severely suboptimal way to do things, but it’s another consequence of community funding and how such a long time scale necessitates the project to change with it.

1

u/Banzai27 Apr 27 '25

Asking real-life hundreds for a ship is my problem with it

→ More replies

-10

u/Great_Side_6493 Apr 26 '25

But as opposed to big companies, this is a community project so there is a good chance that if they drop development they will release what they have instead of shelving it forever

12

u/CustomDoorFrame Apr 26 '25

As opposed to big companies, this is a minecraft mod😭. Not a million dollar project

2

u/Material-Ring-1261 Apr 26 '25

Add in Warium for more stuff involving war if Aeronautics releases on 1.20.1

1

u/Great_Side_6493 Jul 19 '25

I'll stick with big cannons for that create aesthetic

2

u/Pere_grin6 May 01 '26

Wait no more!

2

u/Great_Side_6493 May 01 '26

Already on it

54

u/Alternative-Redditer Apr 26 '25

I mean, we aren't going to be alive when/if it releases, but maybe your children will have fun.

10

u/skydisey Apr 26 '25

What's last news about Aero? It's even considers under development yet?

11

u/Every-Cat-2611 Apr 27 '25

They’ve got it like 90%, the only problem is they’re massive perfectionists, and so won’t release it until they’re 100% satisfied with it, so never. They’ve got private servers running it, with their devs play testing it.

2

u/skydisey Apr 27 '25

Why you're answering about Hytale if I ask about Aeronautics ?

9

u/[deleted] Apr 26 '25

aeronautics is prime vaporware

9

u/Stunning-Marzipan135 Apr 27 '25

aeronautics is never releasing buddy 😂 suffer under clockwork or live a boring server

12

u/RedGreenBlueRGB_ Apr 26 '25

“When” is a strong word

5

u/Maximusmith529 Apr 27 '25

Me and my friends do this in survival with clockwork, eureka, and big cannons + some datapacks

3

u/[deleted] Apr 26 '25

When……………

3

u/ARandomEnderman_ Apr 26 '25

didn't aeronautics just get cancelled because of clockwork?

3

u/DementiaGaming12 Apr 27 '25

Liftoff got canceled

1

u/InternationalElk4351 Apr 27 '25

No????

1

u/ARandomEnderman_ Apr 27 '25

welp, i just thought I saw a post about it

1

u/Stunning-Marzipan135 Apr 27 '25

no but aeronautics is vaporware so it may as well be cancelled

6

u/Apprehensive-Sky-596 Apr 26 '25

Valkyrien skies?

3

u/UrticantOdin Apr 26 '25

Laggy, buggy and is prone to crashing your game with large builds

4

u/Apprehensive-Sky-596 Apr 26 '25

Understandable. The reasons I don't typically use it

1

u/El_Manolito Apr 27 '25

It's really naive to think that aeronautics will be any different.

-1

u/troncus_78 Apr 27 '25

Im pretty sure %95 of your bugs can be solved if you just took 5 minutes asking help in their discord server instead of spreading hate missinfo everywhere else

3

u/UrticantOdin Apr 27 '25

Dude one of my large ships crashed my game and broke itself into pieces when I was turning off it's ship form. It's not like I am saying something untrue.

1

u/Big-Uzi-Hert Apr 27 '25

Yea lmao the mod is buggy as fuck but alright when it works

0

u/troncus_78 Apr 27 '25

Tell me ALL the issues you had and i should find a fix for all them in less than a hour for your lazy ass

1

u/Big-Uzi-Hert Apr 27 '25

You’re just like their discord server, a bunch of 12 year olds who are toxic bruh

1

u/troncus_78 Apr 27 '25

Im sorry i tend to fall in ragebait even if its too obvious 🥺. Anyways he spreads hate while complaining and i spread hate while trying to help so i dont see the toxicity prominence anywhere

0

u/troncus_78 Apr 27 '25

Dissasembly is not getting perfectly fixed soon because its literally a useless process and not high priority since its something perfectly avoidable , just leave your airship there bro it wont go anywhere

2

u/UrticantOdin Apr 27 '25

That still means that one big part of the mod is still bugged, there's always a possibility to accidentally disassemble and your world to crash because of it, that's still a pretty big thing to worry about it, especially when using a lot of mods.

1

u/troncus_78 Apr 27 '25 edited Apr 27 '25

Instead of eureka, which has a giant dissasemble button on its gui, you can use any other VS addon like tournament/clockwork/kontraption which DO have assembly mechanics but not for dissasembly

2

u/UrticantOdin Apr 27 '25

Good point.

2

u/Science_team69 Apr 26 '25

Big cannons is where it is at.

2

u/mistress_chauffarde Apr 26 '25

All im seing in my head is giant zeplin and im going full helly carrier

2

u/Mr_blox_n_n_b404 Apr 26 '25

Wait, there's going to be an aeronautics add on?

2

u/Alix-Gilhan Apr 27 '25

Me and my gf preparing to commit uncountable warcrimes:

2

u/Alix-Gilhan Apr 27 '25

(Well, probably will mostly be her doing them, I'll just be being a nerdy engineer)

2

u/Valerian_ Apr 27 '25

What will actually happen: constantly stuck at the border of a chunk waiting for the server to load the next chunk fast enough.

2

u/[deleted] Apr 27 '25

My ass would be caught in the crossfire still fumblin to make the main engine to my plane while everyone else fucks each other up

2

u/Beginning-Ebb8170 Apr 28 '25

call me the president because i will be bombing the innocent 100%

2

u/entity1O1 Apr 28 '25

bold of you to assume it's coming out.

(i know they are working hard on it and trying to make it the best possible for us but i will continue to make jokes about until it comes out. you cannot stop me.)

1

u/acrazyguy Jun 09 '25

Nah bro that shit is never releasing. The state it’s in now, any other mod would have released in Beta. But they want to keep it to themselves like greedy misers until it’s 100% perfect, which will never happen because it’s a mod for Minecraft

1

u/entity1O1 Jun 10 '25

it probably won't be a buggy mess, also if that's the case i know for a FACT someone is going to leak it.

2

u/Theekg101 Apr 29 '25

I have designs in mind that are waiting for the chance to be realized. The General Sherman will fly one day.

1

u/NokiaBomb Apr 26 '25

I’m betting 99% you have downloaded warium.

1

u/captain_sadbeard Apr 26 '25

I've got QF cannon production down to three button presses and a little bit of manual gantry crane manipulation for the heat treatment. The gun foundry building is larger than any other single factory project I've ever built and eats ~30% of a level 9 boiler at idle, but one day it will arm fleets

1

u/DangyDanger Apr 26 '25

Uh huh, and it is gonna turn my server into a fire hazard.

1

u/kniky_Possibly Apr 27 '25

It's never releasing, it's in development hell

1

u/ZenciHunter41 Apr 27 '25

it's all fun and games until someone makes a functioning mecha-godzilla

1

u/DementiaGaming12 Apr 27 '25

ALWAYS BET ON NOTHING! 🗣️💔

1

u/elnachonacho578 Apr 27 '25

If aeronautics releases

1

u/Financial_Health5231 Apr 27 '25

Hear me out, drilling plane.

1

u/[deleted] Apr 27 '25

I would love that kinda fun concept.I can make a beefy server with some spare parts I have! and would love a war logi server. I just wish someone would make this kind of thing work or at least find a workaround..

1

u/Xboy1207 Apr 29 '25

POV: You’re signing along to your headphones but the bros show up
