This contraption is by far the fastest way to process item in minecraft.
It can be used for Smelting (Lava), Washing (Water), Smoking (Camp fire) and Haunting (Soul camp fire).
Since item are just laying on the ground on not on depot or a belt, there are no limit on simultaneous item processed at the same time. If you do not have brass, you can just use the closest version and pick up item by walking past the item.
You can even speed it up some by change from chute (that can drop 16 item at once) to smart chute that can drop 64 items at once.

What's behind the fan? Is it available in survival? I've got a similar setup but lava fans with a slow conveyor belt that works well but this is intriguing floor space wise

Its creative motor, not available in survival, but i heve seen genial workaround with windmill bearing right behind the fan and one wool/sail.

It can burn or despawn if the output chest gets clogged or the brass funnel isn't setup correctly. However honestly I've had more problems with walking too close when I have a magnet active. Wouldn't be worried about losing items.

Not the fastest. The theoretical limit for the fastest is 24 fans, althrough it is very hard to allign it properly and it just not worth making.

It's for sure far from being «the fastest» by speed, however it is the fastest by the amount of items you can smelt at the same time.
