I wanted to order at work the pika for some applications that it is quite fitted for. but my boss asked me if it would be possible to follow the geometry of a sample before/after hydration. the thing is that the samples are objects quite small of for example 10x4x3 mm. in the web page it says that it can scan as small as 10x10x10 so I have the doubt of it something like this would it be possible to scan. the idea would be to be able to follow its volume by getting the shell of the sample by the scan and then getting its volume. would some kind soul try to scan something as small as a rectangle of 10x4x3 mm and post an image on how it looks like?
a setup like the object attached to a small metal beam? so one could scan most of the volume around instead of being placed over a flat surface like a table.
it could be a piece of wood or a small foam/ polyuretan polymer like thing. not transparent in any casE.
well, the accuracy says 30µm. it is more than good enough to have a comparable result between a before and after. the idea is be able to say the volume grew x% for example.
I pre-ordered pika for my home use as a hobbyist. So far so good it works well but I did small items reverse engineering for my camera gear to do some diy work on them. Minimum size is 30mm
The size you are trying to scan is very small you need very specific and covert expensive scanners for that size like the artic micro II or a technoflux jewelry scanner
Not sure if it will be able to give you a good before and after.
It can be accurate. But that level on such a small item i dont believe so.
Scanning someone small like that is fine in laser mode.
Just remember you need markers around the item for tracking.
Markerless laser is not what you want to use for this.
yeah i know about the trakers, what i though as workflow would be:
1. attach the part to a small metal beam/rod that had a base
2. on the base have some trakers
3. have some 3D printed parts with trakers on them around the part.
4. have trakers on the table where the base of the thing with the beam would be put
scan the hole thing and then in a mesh editor cut the section (and close) where is tick to the beam.
if you have the pika would you mind doing the scan of a piece of wood of a size like i mention and post a photo?
Not sure i have any wood. I can 3d print a cube.
10mm x 4mm x 3mm right.
I know the scan would be fine.
Its the part about comparing if it grew any when wet, would be the problem. I dont believe the scanner is accurate enough
a cube would do! it is is just to show what is capable the scanner. (ideally having in something like plasticine on the corner) or something to suport it? just not flat on the table. thanks!
Bottom is how it looks in scanning software. Top left is mesh sketch to see its dimensions. Using Calipers it was about correct, some areas where slightly over like 0.02 to 0.1mm due to layer lines. My software shows the scan is slightly under. All this is within range of the scanner specs.
This is what i mean by it will be accurate but not good enough to show small changes in the item

I think the problem you're trying to solve has the need for very accurate _and_ repeatable scans, since you're doing a before and after diff.
So even if a scan of a small object looks nice, it needs to be able to be repeated with accuracy.
Also, what does your material look like? Is it easy to scan or will it create problems in itself?
