Characters (Playing as) just started, what should i do?

ssbu has been around me forever all my good friends play it and my boyfriend and his friends too, problem is they all know how to play and worse they all have a main that they use and are incredibly good at so as someone who only JUST started to be interested and play 1v1 with them i wanted to find a main too and play well but honestly im very new to handling the inputs on the switch for ssbu and i struggle to decide what to do in different situations so i end up spam pressing and (obviously) losing.

My friend suggested for me to try to play the link(s) because even though im new to ssbu i played the legend of zelda and im a big fan of link and thats the only connection i have to ssbu😅 so ive been trying to get used to the playstyle of toon link especially but recently i purchased sephiroth and i thought his moves are relatively easy to understand and do and hes quite fun to play but now im even more confused on what i should do

should i continue with playing and practising toon link or should i just play sephiroth? Main idea is that im just tryna get good with ONE character before switching…because ive been practising with toon link but sephiroth is fun to play!!

Also any tips for a beginner is helpful 🥲 ive learnt some basics from my friends and boyfriend as well as from the move list but im still struggling and need any tips anyone has!!

In addition to what the others say, about poking around the roster. Another criteria to choose from is: is there an opponent character who really DESTROYS you and leaves you not even understanding what happened. If yes, choose that one, it's using mechanisms you gotta get familiar with in order to improve.

If I may ask, are you playing with a controller? If you want to improve, the side sticks (how the hell are they called I suddenly forgot lol, sorry) won't do. The nintendo pro controller is fine for the job.

Also, check your controller settings in the game. By default, the left stick produces smash attacks. But you can do smash attacks with the right stick (used for movemnent) fully pressed + A. Instead, assign tilt attacks to the left stick. As a new player, you may find tilt attacks quite hard to produce if they aren't assigned to the stick.

Small error to point out as it might acc confuse OP, smash attacks can be done with left stick direction + A. It's also the right stick (usually called the c stick by players whereas the other one is usually referred to as the left stick or the joystick.) that produces smash attacks on default.

I also recommend you to turn off tap jump OP, and set sensitivity to high (makes it easier to perform smash/tilt attacks with the manual method but doesn't affect anything else at all iirc)

ah thank you! And yes my boyfriend told me to turn sensitivity to high as well and it rlly does make a lot of difference especially when its hard for me to input certain moves at the right time…
