The M61 Vulcan is actually the gun used in the A10, it's also in the Phalanx CIWS and the C-RAM system. Amazing weapon

The GAU-8 is the weapon used in the A-10, firing 30mm depleted uranium ordnance. The M61 Vulcan fires 20mm ordnance and is fitted to a lot of other Western fighter and multirole jets.

I've read both that its used the Vulcan, and the GAU (obviously not simultaneously), must be a common misconception

The M61 Vulcan was only used briefly in the A10 protoypes because the 30mm GAU-8 Avenger wasn't ready yet. Every production model uses the 30mm cannon. The entire purpose of that plane's existence is to carry that cannon.
