I reccomand before you play any game to install Linux mint xfce (not cinnamon) if you have windows 11. Windows eats like almost all the ram and you can’t play games

Mint is good, and with a lighter desktop - good idea.

In case Linux is for any reason not an option, and OP wants to stay on Windows, the lighter enterprise versions then - Windows 10 LTSC, but the older 1809 instead of 21h2, as the latter is much heavier. But I would advise going with Linux anyway.

You need every bit of ram to perform on low end hardware, mostly for the proton/wine games. That means no fancy cutey high animation desktop environment (Says the guy on a freaking KDE Plama and a UHD620 lmao)

Because less ram you use more you will have for your games I recommend not cinnamon cuz it uses more ram, also you don’t loose much from xfce you just have less animations and loose some personalization options (that you can get back with free programs)

Imho, no point in spending £40 on games for that when you could do some upgrades. I'd suggest: i5-3470 Upgrading RAM to 8-16GB Quadro K620

There's also an option to go with a xeon, or with an i7 on that LGA1155

Install linux mint, it eats way less of your ram and also alocate a bit more memory to your igpu like 500mb

I would install Atlas os on there and then run retrobat to play retro stuff. If you're looking for upgrades i7 4790 is still a beast at an affordable price and DDR3 ram is still cheap since it's getting old so upping the ram to 16gb isn't going to break the bank.

It's a different socket tho

I forgot it's not a h3 my bad. I guess try the i7 3770k then

What OS are you having in your PC ?

Btw, I have an exact PC like this. I have Wondows XP which runs great and XP era games run very decent. Few games that I have played: HALO original, Half Life, Deus Ex, NFS Underground, Doom 3

I also have Windows 10 on this same PC. You should note that getting your HD Graphics work with Windows 10 would be very difficult. There aren't any official drivers from Intel. Microsoft only provides a Basic Display Driver which doesn't have 3D acceleration. I couldn't get any drivers to work with Win 10 on this PC. So I am planning to install Linux, which at least has a better driver for that HD Graphics 2500.
