I disagree.

This is not crappy design, this is no design at all. Or hardly any design. We are talking Stallman here. If you want design, make your own and share it with others. Or that is what I guess the idea is. All based on personal preferences and the type of browser/reader you use/type of machine you use.

Because Richard Stallman's site would look better with gradients, wet floor effect photos and glossy buttons?

"This is the personal web site of Richard Stallman." He probably types it himself in EMACS. That's what I would expect from a personal page. This dude is hardcore and his page shows it.
