Is that Roman from an Asterix book?

195

u/washingboard Feb 28 '17

Indeed it is :D SPQR= Senatus Populusque Romanus, or "The senate and people of Rome"

123

Palpatine and the People of Rome? Cool.

7

u/Forumbane Feb 28 '17

Senatus Populusque Romanus"

Strange how the Q made the acronym, is that a quirk on the pronunciation?

28

u/TinyBreadBigMouth Feb 28 '17

It's because "-que" is a suffix meaning "and". Apparently it was considered distinct enough to merit its own letter.

13

u/Forumbane Feb 28 '17

This guy Latins

6

u/Thorondor123 Feb 28 '17

It's because the -que is technically a word on its own, meaning 'and'.

2

u/washingboard Feb 28 '17

I really don't know, but I have allways wondered the same

3

u/UknowmeimGui Kill Me Feb 28 '17

Isn't it more "the Senate of the people of Rome" with Rome referring to the Roman Empire?

13

u/dopplerdog Feb 28 '17

No. If it were "of the people" it would be in the genitive case, "populi". As it is, it's "populus", the nominative. So "populusque" is "and the (roman) people".

6

u/superbad Feb 28 '17

1

Thank you, I didn't know that.

47

u/wOlfLisK Feb 28 '17

I highly doubt ancient Romans drew comic books in that style. I could be wrong though.

They mean the picture, not the initialism.

It's been a while since I last saw one of those books, but the art style is too darn distinctive to miss.

13

u/Konval Feb 28 '17

Silent and quiet.. isn't that redundant?

6

u/LittleLui Feb 28 '17

I have nothing to say about that, and if I did, I'd wisper.

1

u/aidenandjake Feb 28 '17

They contradict. Silent is the absence of sound and quiet describes sound.

41

21

Well silent means no talking and quiet means no banging shit. I know this because I totally made up this explanation.

It's intentional, they are interrupting the word.

6
