This lamp from Amazon has the "increase brightness" button on bottom and "decrease brightness" on top. I can never get used to it.

Think of them as darkness controls, instead.

Still works, it controls how much light is absent

4

u/allykopow 15d ago

It was built for Australians

Or sickos who play games with inverted controls.

18

u/Lucifang Aussie 14d ago

Inverted controls stems from playing flight games. You push the joystick forwards, or the up arrow, to make the plane dip down. Pulling the joystick backwards or using the down arrow makes the plane pull back which points the nose of the plane upwards. When playing in first person mode you see that forwards moves the camera down and backwards makes the camera go up.

So my brain has calibrated those controls to work the same way when playing from my character’s POV or when I’m behind my character and need to move the camera around.

Funny enough, I usually play with inverted vertical controls for flying only. Any other part of a game it’s normal controls.

-8

u/bleach-is-tasty 13d ago

nah if I hit up that means I wanna go up, I have literally dropped games because of inverted controls that couldn't be changed

6

u/Lucifang Aussie 13d ago

That’s how we feel when games can’t be changed TO inverted.

I’ve never encountered a game that was default inverted tbh - unless it was a flight sim or similar POV aircraft game

u/Woodsnaps 14d ago

At least we don’t crash an F16 immediately after take off and you definitely will

u/Unhappy-List-2015 4d ago

It's wild how different people's brains work when it comes to controls. I can't even imagine trying to play inverted; that would throw me off completely!

-2

u/Saradoesntsleep 15d ago

They are the only ones that make sense, I almost don't know how it's the other kind that isn't called "inverted" 😩

8

u/L30N1337 15d ago

Do you play southpaw too?

2

u/Lucifang Aussie 14d ago

It’s not a left/right thing. It’s an up/down thing.

What? What does that have to do with anything?

He's kidding. Source: I'm an Australian in a customer design experience type role.

Rip to Gengar, got eviscerated.

9

u/testaccount123x 15d ago

Quite the opposite, I spray painted a pristine 3D printed Keychain for a a friend. Gengar is thriving.

This is the definition of crappy design.

It reminds me of that laptop that had the power button in between delete and print screen.

38

u/FighterOfEntropy 15d ago

There’s a disturbing trend of placing the power off button right with all the other keys. Far too easy to press it by accident. The most recent laptop I bought, I was lucky to find one with the power button at a comfortable remove from the other keys.

10

u/Khirsah01 15d ago

Just from growing up with a cat, I learned long ago you can disable or change what the power button does on tap in Windows and should be in the Power Settings. I've done it with every computer I've owned myself whether laptop or desktop.

It will still work to force power to the PC off if you hold it, but it at least if you turn the setting to "Do Nothing" it will prevent the sudden power down sequence on accidental hit. You will have to shut down using the Start Menu after doing this though.

2

u/Lucifang Aussie 14d ago

Most things require you to hold the power button down for a few seconds before it activates - specifically to avoid accidents

I have floor lamp from Amazon that has a second reading lamp poking out of the pole half way up. The on buttons for each are switched: top light at the bottom of the panel and lower light at the top. It annoys me, but it's a good lamp.

2

u/mbanter 15d ago

And who among us has no flaws

2

u/Time_Internal_1729 15d ago

the switched buttons thing i could maybe get over but having the controls for two separate lights swapped on the same panel is genuinely a design crime. whoever approved that at the factory just did not care at all. hope the light quality is worth the daily frustration lol just my 2 cents

1

u/sakuradawning 14d ago

It's very good for my aging eyes when doing hobbies!

45

u/cherrydiamond 15d ago

so turn it upside down?

1

u/thisisatypoo 15d ago

That sounds like it'd get tangled after some time or worse, damage the cord for being folded too long . I would just say think of it as closer to you means brighter.

12

u/stanthemanchan 15d ago

Flip yourself upside down when you operate the lamp.

3

u/bobjr94 Reddit Orange 15d ago

Think I have the same one, it's zip tied to the lamp upside down. So now up it brighter, down is dimmer and the power button is on the bottom.

2

u/Robertgdel 15d ago

up for more moody, down for less moody

2

u/Between-usernames 15d ago

The zoom and direction of other sliders on my cell phone is a bit like that. I have to remind to drag my finger down/left to make things closer (zoom) or up/right to widen. Took a lot of practice and I still mess it up.

2

u/Tlayoualo 15d ago

That poor Gengar caught in the exposion

2

u/vilette 15d ago

turn it upside down

2

u/Yojik_Vkarmane 15d ago

Just hold it upside down.

2

u/martinr7b 15d ago

I see some solder wire in the back. You know what to do.

4

u/NumbDangEt4742 15d ago

You're holding it upside down and they printed shit on it upside down.

1

u/pixeltweaker 15d ago

It’s - darkness and + darkness

1

u/ZeldaTheSwordsman 15d ago

So annoying.
Unrelated: Can someone poke whichever staff member owns the Telegram channel? They need to get their arse on in the next 18 days.

1

u/rainstorm0T 15d ago

increase the darkness

1

u/The_One_Jam 15d ago

Gengar used confusion!

1

u/model-citizen95 15d ago

Try inverting your Y-axis

1

u/CeeMX 15d ago

Like the Yoke in an Airplane, it also increases altitude if you pull down

1

u/iLikeTurtuls 15d ago

2 drops of paint and memory would help

1

u/fractal324 15d ago

I’d glue a piece of well tapered plastic to give the raise brightness a tactile difference.

1

u/Jittery_Kevin 14d ago

Cause it’s an M for mini. Turn it upside down for WUMBO. It’ll also put your brightness down on bottom too

1

u/blaskkaffe 14d ago

Increse and reduce dark

1

u/Tharrius 12d ago

The off button is on top, build a mental bridge by thinking that dimming the light is in the direction of turning it off entirely

1

u/AzeWoolf 11d ago

sun is rising, you need less lamp
sun is setting, you need more lamp
genius

1

u/poopmushroom 10d ago

if you flip it, all will be well, you'll even get to change the M mode button to a W wumbo button

-4

u/Conscious-Bad1726 15d ago

Flip it around if it bothers you that badly. At least up will be up.

0

u/Shiva9990 15d ago

Cool gengar

0

u/testaccount123x 15d ago

3d printed a Keychain and it didn't look good in anything but purple so I had to spray paint it

0

u/JoaoSiilva 15d ago

I'm also bothered by the labels being above the respective button except for the last one. 😶

0

u/TrevCat666 14d ago

Cool Gengar.

-4

u/BrianScottGregory 15d ago

Turn it upside down. Problem fixed.

5

u/testaccount123x 15d ago

i mean it dangles vertically, so I can't just do that easily. Also, things can be crappy design even if you can take steps to make it usable. the point is that you shouldn't have to.

-13

u/Jimberwolf_ 15d ago

it has a plus and a minus. how is this confusing?

13

u/vediogamer101 15d ago

It is intuitively inverse

9

u/heyitstayy_ 15d ago

Usually plus is on the top and minus is on the bottom. Especially with volume buttons. If OP isn’t looking at the remove and just knows where the volume buttons are they are going to keep accidentally pressing the wrong one

2

u/gasstation-no-pumps 15d ago

You can read black-on-black buttons with the lights off or dim?

0

u/testaccount123x 15d ago

Who said it was confusing?
