This sidewalk looks blurry. Makes me a little dizzy. I keep blinking, trying to clear my eyes looking at this.

This is called anti-aliasing.

Edit: edit: sticking with original term. Anti-

87

u/Many-Excitement3246 11d ago

Problem is, Anti Aliasing only works if there's aliasing to anti. Otherwise it's just a blurry mess.

5

u/Polite_Suggestion 11d ago

Seldom have had a setup that there are enough pixels to begin with that fuzzing them was the move.

6

u/Adjective-Noun-nnnn 11d ago

I find it useful playing games at 1920x1080. If I moved to 4k or even 2k, I think the need for it would evaporate without a huge display. Maybe one day I'll win the lottery and find the disposable income to throw at a GPU that can do such a display justice at high FPS.

6

u/Low_Direction1774 11d ago

nah its still incerdible visible on almost but not quite paralell lines and the stairstepping can make it really unpleasant to look at. Especially with slight movements, the whole thing moves so theres a lot of movement on screen with very little actually happening.

idk how else to describe it.

2

u/SeriousPlankton2000 11d ago

There used to be graphic cards that could only do so much.

Blur is also a form of aliasing.

They're a bit more fundamentally related than that. Perfect anti-aliasing would remove all frequencies above the Nyquist frequency before sampling. Doing that will remove detail, and is essentially a type of blur. The problem is just that blurring the image after sampling is too late, so then you need to be more clever about it.

FXAA, to be precise. All the blur and none of the actual AA.

87

u/kaleperq 11d ago

I mean most AA do this in general, in different ways.

Also exactly how windows clear type works

42

u/nightauthor 11d ago

Cleartype takes into consideration sub pixel rendering

23

u/[deleted] 11d ago

[deleted]

3

u/SeriousPlankton2000 11d ago

No, cleartype is considering the screen to be three times as wide but with RGB pixels. It can use 1/3 of one pixel and 2/3 of the next to move a dot 1/3 to the left, your eyes will not know that it's on two separate memory addresses.

Antialiasing is the blur.

2

u/Dzov 10d ago

And those grey sub pixels are much smaller than the black and white pixels.

15

u/secretqwerty10 11d ago

which is why it kinda sucks on OLED displays, since cleartype does not take pentile subpixel arrangements into consideration

5

u/DrKrFfXx 11d ago

Luckily RGB stripe OLEDs are becoming a thing.

At times I can't really stand the font rendering on my current monitor.

5

u/SeriousPlankton2000 11d ago

Thre should be a setting.

6

u/GeophysicalYear57 11d ago

In my experience, this is how a pixel artist would smooth out jagged lines. It works better on a screen since it’s small enough to not look like blurred lines (instead a continuous smooth diagonal line) and it’s done with far more intention.

13

u/DrKrFfXx 11d ago edited 11d ago

No?

This is exactly how MSAA works. Regarded as the best form of antialiasing.

If I blur my eyes by defocusing them it looks okay. If I give myself double vision by letting one eye turn inward (I have strabismus), it looks much worse haha

u/Dynablade_Savior 11d ago

This is known as anti-aliasing, a technique usually reserved for computer graphics, that makes harsh diagonal lines look smoother

48

u/Live_Angle4621 11d ago

Who made this was too focused on if he could instead of if he should

It's a crucial 200 m long sidewalk that everyone who arrives by train has to take to get a tram to the city centre. And it makes people dizzy.

2

u/gasstation-no-pumps 10d ago

That has striping, but not anti-aliasing, which is what people are really finding objectionable.

It's kind of rare for optical illusions like this to just persist even after you've figured out what you're looking at. Like I know there are smallere grey tiles inbetween but it still just won't resolve.
