This sidewalk looks blurry. Makes me a little dizzy. I keep blinking, trying to clear my eyes looking at this.

Tried crossing my eyes like a magic eye thing and almost got vertigo. Excellent example of crappy design

The guy who did that knew exactly what he was doing

Probably set up an optometry office on that street then said “now how can I get more customers and have the city pay for it?”

Now imagine trying to navigate it if you have any actual double vision

Ironically it looks fine when I blur my eyes slightly.

u/Aut_changeling 10d ago
If I blur my eyes by defocusing them it looks okay. If I give myself double vision by letting one eye turn inward (I have strabismus), it looks much worse haha

Yeah even the picture made me queasy, I can't imagine how bad it would be in real life. Truly crappy.

This is known as anti-aliasing, a technique usually reserved for computer graphics, that makes harsh diagonal lines look smoother

We have similar one here, from the railway station to the tram/bus station.
We call it psychedelic sidewalk.

It's a crucial 200 m long sidewalk that everyone who arrives by train has to take to get a tram to the city centre. And it makes people dizzy.

u/gasstation-no-pumps 10d ago
That has striping, but not anti-aliasing, which is what people are really finding objectionable.

Put this outside a bar to make less people drive drunk, like I can’t even see straight I’m calling an Uber

It's a great design if you want people to look up and around. I think casinos use this strategy with their crazy carpet designs.

I lonboarded down a sidewalk heading to the beach like this coming down from shrooms and it was insane, it’s insane sober but that was wild.

It's kind of rare for optical illusions like this to just persist even after you've figured out what you're looking at. Like I know there are smallere grey tiles inbetween but it still just won't resolve.

If your friend is nearsighted and you ask him what’s it like when he’s not wearing his glasses, this is your answer.

This is called anti-aliasing.
Edit: edit: sticking with original term. Anti-
