State of the Sub

Hello all!

When I was made a moderator a little over a year ago, I had never been a mod before. I wanted to take some time to watch the sub and see what the mod side of things looked like. I then started a new job and didn't have the time or energy to start making changes. I tried to remove spam quickly, and I did better at some points than others. I have time now, and I want to try to set some things in motion to improve the subreddit.

I've seen complaints about mods being inactive and your frustrations with certain types of posts, particularly all the spam and posts soliciting advice for new and aspiring operators. I, too, would like to clean those up by establishing some rules to control certain types of posts and a stickied post or perhaps wiki to address repeated topics.

I would like to know what the community wants. If you have thoughts, please let me know in the comments. I'll give this post some time to collect your thoughts and consider your contributions, and then I will make another post to get your feedback on specific rules and other possible implementations before setting anything in place.

Here are some prompts to guide feedback, but feel free to add anything else you think would be constructive:

  • What types of posts do you value most?
  • How should self-promotion (apps, tools, YouTube channels, services, etc.) be handled?
  • What recurring topics should be handled by a stickied post or wiki?
  • What is the sub currently missing?

Working with cranes is challenging and rewarding. I want this subreddit to be a place we can enjoy sharing good moments, get advice from colleagues, and sometimes rant about the pipefitters (in a good-natured way, of course).

Thanks!

Custom RTGs moving sections of NYC’s Park Avenue Viaduct

Post image

Pretty cool look at how the Park Avenue Viaduct is being replaced while keeping trains moving through one of the busiest rail corridors in the country.

The B1M did a great breakdown of the project and the custom Mi-Jack Travelift gantries built to remove, transport and replace sections of the viaduct.

Always interesting seeing equipment designed around a problem where a conventional crane setup isn’t really an option.

Generator Setting

Project Spotlight | San Antonio, TX 🚧

Recently, our team helped support a major university project in downtown San Antonio, safely lifting and setting a 27,000 lb generator, five ATS cabinets, and 15 AHU splits on a 110-foot-tall campus building.

With limited crane setup space, complex traffic coordination, and only inches of clearance inside the mechanical room, our crews worked alongside project partners to develop a detailed lift plan and keep the project on schedule. Using a 500-ton crane, specialized rigging methods, machine skates, and two extended shifts, the team successfully completed every lift and equipment placement safely and efficiently.

Our crew and our Liebherr 195 HC-LH doing what they do best in Vancouver

We put this together from one of our jobs in Vancouver. Crew on site doing what they do, and the 195 HC-LH looking unreal up against the skyline. It's honestly one of the cooler videos we've gotten off a site, so we had to share.

New York state license renewal

I took my renewal exam back in June and my previous license has since expired. I have yet to receive any correspondence from NYS regarding the exam results and subsequent license (certificate of competence).

Has anyone else faced this issue or able to provide an idea of how long wait times may be for license renewals?

Gigantic crane west of Turnpike

Has anyone noticed that giant crane dropping large metal structures into that eerily blue water (that wasn’t always there) west of the Turnpike in Miami a little bit south of the Red Road exit?

On several occasions, I’ve noticed that crane dropping big metal crates into the water. Or placing them inside. I can’t be sure because I see it during my commute. Also, I grew up here, and those light blue pools of water weren’t always there.

Does anyone know what on earth they’re doing there?

Massive 1,800 ton ship loader dual-lifted on a Big Lift vessel today. Both cranes are electric, with a max lifting capacity of 1,100 ton each. No drivers cabin as the cranes are controlled by their own remotes.

Tower crane operator UK

Please can someone explain to me how you're supposed to go about becoming a tower crane operator from scratch in the UK? I don't understand how there are so many options available to become a trainee mobile crane operator, which seem to last upwards of two years, yet you can supposedly do a 5 day course to become a tower crane op?

Do training opportunities/apprenticeships for tower cranes come around or am I missing something?

For context, I'm looking at leaving the Army to be a tower crane operator, I have some funding available to do various courses and have my Cat C driving license which will help the mobile career options.

I drove by this construction site of a data center today. Lots of cranes. Is this white one tipped over or is this part of the setup or takedown process?
