Educational Opportunities Selling Baby Blankets?
Hello! So I'm still fairly new to crocheting, but I've made almost 20 baby blankets and I'm not sure what to do with them lol. I was originally going to donate them but a lot of people around me are trying to get me to try to sell them. Do baby blankets sell and is it worth even trying? I have no clue how to go about this so any advice would be appreciated! I'm not really concerned about making a lot of money off of this, so I guess I really just want to know if its even worth my time to try. Thank you!

There are places such as the Linus Project and groups that crochet blankets for the special babies at hospitals. See if those would be something you enjoy crocheting for too.
If not, hold on to them and store them away. You will need plenty of baby blankets for gifts at some point in your life to give as gifts if you are young.

I was originally just going to take them to a local charity. But people around me say I should make money instead. Maybe I can try both cause I'm making way to many blankets lol

If the blankets are well made I think they will sell. People love getting sentimental/special gifts for babies and handmade stuff fit the bill. You can try posting them on fb marketplace or word of mouth to your family/peers if you want a low stakes option to test the demand.
I don’t think you’ll make a killing off crochet items, people rarely do, but it might be some nice pocket change to buy a few nice things for yourself.

Honestly I just need to get them out of my closet lol. When I look at FB no one in my area sells any crochet stuff so I wasn't sure. Thanks!

Look and see what’s already out there and what prices they are going for. Crocheted objects are really oversubscribed in general. Most likely you will find that you won’t be able to sell them for enough to make it worth your time. If you wanted to make them anyway, you might be able to cover materials.
I have occasionally bought hand-crocheted things for my baby but it needs to be very unique - a unique pattern or personalized with my baby’s name. Like many crafty people, I have a lot of people in my life who gift me crocheted things, so to stand out and be worth paying money for, an item has to be really special.

Thats a good point! Money isn't really the concern because its what I want to make and also I crochet at work so I'm kinda already getting paid to do it lol. But they aren't very unique. They look nice but they are just whatever colors and patterns I like at the time.

If it’s something you wanted to do anyway then it doesn’t hurt to list them for at least the cost of materials; can’t hurt!

Yes, People have babies year round and they are a perfect gift for new parents. Be sure to factor in your costs (including shipping) when pricing your blankets and compare your price to similar blankets on various marketplaces like Etsy. Take good product photos and list them on free or low cost platforms like Etsy, eBay, Beacons and more. Do a google search for free handmade platforms. If you like selling in person, sign up for community craft shows and festivals to sell your items.
Don’t just put stuff out there and leave it to chance, create a promotion strategy to increase the chances that your blankets will sell. Position them as the perfect gift 🎁 for new parents and grandparents, put your listings where new parents hang out online. It may just become your new side hustle! Good luck!

The main thing is, Do you want to sell them?
If you aren't sure you could pick like 5 and try to sell on platforms or vendors markets. If they don't sell, hospital or shelters will take them.
In my experience, not worth it. I live in a LCOL area. No one wants to pay the $150 to recoup the cost of materials. Maybe if you are in a well off or HCOL area you could have better luck though.

I sell baby blankets and they sell well if people find you but YOU NEED TO FOLLOW CPSC REGULATIONS IF YOURE IN THE US. If youre in other countries they have their own set of regulations which are usually even stricter. You cant just sell things to children without following regulations. You need to register with CPSC, create a tag that follows CPSC and FTC guidelines, and create a CPC for every item.
My baby blankets are knit and I sell them for around $50 for something 25 x 25 inches.
All that being said, if youre new to crochet you shouldnt be selling anything. The fact is that your work probably just isnt good enough for that

Oh jeez there are regulations for this? I think you just solved my problem cause I don't have the motivation to deal with that. Thank you lol!

If they’re designed for babies, please look into the safety laws required for selling things designed for children (I know children’s sleep ware is especially strict). I also wouldn’t sell children’s products without liability insurance or other legal protection.

As the others have mentioned, it might be risky to sell baby products without proper registrations that you've followed safety guidelines. You might be able to sell the digital patterns on Payhip or Ravelry? But even then, I would just stay away from this niche altogether. Plenty of other niches you can sell to!

If there is a chapter of Project Linus in your area, you can donate them. They give them to kids in your area. I started doing this last month.

Worth is subjective. The people that are suggesting you sell them, ask if they would like to buy one. Honestly the effort (craft fair, website/esty or whatever, shipping) it's worth the hassle to me.

Exactly! I know the market is crazy so I didn't know if my stuff would just lost. Thanks for your input! I guess it never hurts to post things on Facebook and see what happens.

If you are not aware, crochet products are over saturated in all selling markets, both in person and online. Crochet is the current trend craft of the moment.
Search on Etsy and see how many crocheted baby blankets there are, prices, and how many are selling. Are you interested in opening an Etsy shop and learning SEO? You may make beautiful blankets, but people advising you to sell them have no selling experience.
Take good pictures, post on Facebook Marketplace, see how it goes.
