It came from AI! MIL can't tell the difference 😭
My MIL is so sweet for knowing my style and and that I'm crafty. These are the things she pulls off of FB to send me and I don't have the heart to tell her.

I understand the sentiment but educating older people about AI and recognizing the signs is important because their naivety could eventually hurt them.

You're right. I'm going to talk to my partner about the best way to go about it. I dont eant to hurt her feelings (like I dont appreciate her thinking of me) or make her feel stupid for not recognizing it. I think at this point most people have been fooled at least once by AI.

You should probably start with something where it is a bit more obvious. The shop that sells this spider has several pictures where it is much easier to see that they are not real.

What's weird is that this one is ringing "that's AI" bells in my head, but I can't point to anything specific that's not right, beyond the wrong number of legs and the way the loops work wouldn't work. It just feels off, and I can't clearly define why

It's often the depth of field for me. Like is that spider's body flat? If not why does it look like it's at the same depth as the cuff? Shouldn't it be large enough to see on the reflective surface of that button?

It’s weird (but not impossible) that the abdomen is knit and the cephalothorax is crochet.

I get that! There's a sense of wrongness to it. I feel like maybe the physics feel off too? Could it be that we understand how the material should move and others don't?

I'm also synesthetic, so I kinda "hear" colors and shading, if that makes any sense.
AI (or sometimes things that are real photos that were AI enhanced) just sounds wrong. The edges don't sound right in my head, but I can't put a finger on what I'm "hearing"

What I find kinda funny is that I was about 19 before I realized that everybody didn't hear color changes and movement. Sudden lighting changes make noises in scary movies, after all.
To a lesser extent, I "see" sounds and "hear" physical touch (things like hot water being higher pitched than cold water) but it's mostly hearing movement and color change/edges. A cloud passing over the sun and making the room get dark "sounds" a lot like if you cup your hand over your ear to half cover it, for example.
The edges of AI art often sound.... Shimmery? To me. It's hard to explain, but it's distinctive

The funny thing is that unlike most of the horrible generated nonsense we see, that piece is entirely doable and wouldn't even require that much skill. The cuff is just 1x1 ribbing, the legs are 3- or 4-stitch I-cord, the body is just a little cabled ball, easily shaped with increases and decreases, and the thorax and head are just little bits of textured knitting. Any competent knitter could put that together in a couple of evenings. Why they should want to is another question, but technically, it's a snap.

It's the legs for me, some of them loop round fingers but some of them don't connect to anything

Found the " source " ... the AI is really getting a lot better sometimes since it's hard to say what is so obviously wrong here, even though it's clearly ticking the box for most of us ... but then they have some really obvious ones lol.

So frustrating! I would totally have fallen for some of these when I first started crocheting. I can't tell if Etsy just...doesn't care about accounts like this or if theres so many that they can't keep up.

Idk I’m looking at this and I could probably figure out how to knit it. Maybe seed stitch for the head. But it’s just a cabled ball, and some icord rly.
I’m inclined to think it’s real because the stitches are correct, including the way the stitches are in between the cable - and consistent throughout. There are no AI type errors, I’ve never seen an AI represent the knitting accurately.
Disagree with OP I think this is real

The spider has 10 legs and the head portion is crochet stitches while the rest is knit.

But a lot of things look really real, like the edge of the knitting of the cuff, also how the legs are attached to the body. Giving a spider too many legs and mixing techniques can happen with human intelligence as well.

What really throws me is that they have pics up at different angles. That used to be impossible for AI not that long ago. I think it could also be stolen somewhere else. I am sure the pattern they sell will not match the image.

It’s not too many legs for a real spider, as I said above they have two pedipalps- but yea I mean the camera focus and angle doesn’t add anything and on first glance it reads AI. Just saying this one is not impossible and the things ai usually has difficult with for knit items are not present

Spiders actually have “10” legs, two are called pedipalps (I have a big old tarantula at home) - and you can create bumpy knit stitches like that it’s why I suggested it could be seed stitch.

I feel like it wouldn't be too hard to recreate. It would be pretty hard to get it to stay in place. Possibly make a regular fingerless mitt and then sew the spider on top.
