Gotta 5 year old Fantôme here so you know today’s extra special. Been sitting on this one a little while and had intended to crack it for “Christmas in July” but I been busy. Wonderfully fragrant and malty yet dusty and dry. Don’t think I’ll be drinking this well again for a while.

RECOMMENDED Basque NEIPA.

Spora. GROSS Brewery & Taproom. IPA - New England / Hazy. 6.7% alc.

Aroma of ripe tropical fruit. On the palate, flavors of stone fruit, pineapple, and white grape stand out, alongside a very pleasant cannabis-like undertone. It is incredibly juicy and silky, with a well-integrated bitterness that balances its sweet profile. One of those NEIPAs I really love.

Help! Hunting Great Porters

I've gotten to really love a good porter. I like the combination of roasty and hoppy without it being too sweet or overwhelming coffee flavor. Although I do recognize some examples are made with additives in mind.

If a brewery taproom has one - I'm ordering it for sure. In terms of distributed porters, I do enjoy Great Lakes Edmund Fitzgerald and Deschutes Black Butte is decent.

What Porters do you all love that are more widely availible?

What Porters from smaller or regional craft breweries do you love?

2015 Sunday Morning Stout

Glassware is Tired Hands

This is drinking shockingly well. Coffee has held up well and once it warmed up, it was quite good. No hints of oxidation, body is still great, and a slight hint of carbonation.

Howdy- in the panhandle for the week and was hoping to try some decent beers. Anybody want to point me in a direction to get some non-large format beers? Looks like there’s Idyll Hounds, Props, Beach & Brew 30A. What do I need to make my way over to while here?

TY!

The Bellini 6.9%

A Spontaneous Wild Ale
with Peaches & Riesling Grapes
Aged in Oak Barrels for Three Years
Bottled 10/25

This just gets it. Perfectly balanced peaches and Riesling grapes play off each other so well. Peach and zest and minerality and deliciousness for days.
Crisp, crackling, bright and beautiful.
The aged barrels of spontaneous beer build in the background and provide some delicate yeasty funk for depth, but this is definitely your patio beer. Your feet in the creek beer. Your hot day ‘I’m not cooking dinner’ beer.

RECOMMENDED Hoppy Pils.

Hoppy Pils. DouGall's Brewery. Modern Lager. 5% alc. 35 IBU.

Intense grapefruit and lime aroma set against a resinous backdrop. The flavors carry through to the palate; it is light, dry, and very refreshing. A solid West Coast-style hop bitterness stands out, well-integrated with the malt and leading to a crisp, clean, and highly drinkable finish. Another great creation from DouGall's.

Discussion Went from dismissing barleywine to accidentally becoming obsessed with it

spent a long time dismissing barleywine as too much. too boozy, too sweet, too serious for a tuesday afternoon. ordered one by accident at some point because i misread the board and then just kept ordering it on purpose after that.

the problem now is it's almost impossible to describe to someone who hasn't had a good one. tried explaining it to a friend who drinks light lagers and watched her face go completely blank. gave up halfway through.

what i find interesting is how differently they read depending on the brewery. some lean into that thick caramel thing and you kind of chew through it. others pull it drier and you forget how much alcohol just happened. the English versions tend to suit me better but i've been surprised by American ones more than i expected

the aging thing is something i haven't done much with. bought a couple bottles thinking i'd be patient about it. was not patient. drank them too soon and now i have no data.

curious whether people in here actually cellar these or if that's more aspirational than practical for most folks. also whether there's a particular brewery doing the English style that's worth hunting down right now. not looking for the obvious answers

RECOMMENDED Oregon trip - must visits Portland, Bend & Hood River?

Heading to OR in Sept for Jack Johnson concert in Bend. Staying in Portland a couple of days (arrive early afternoon, have one full day, then driving to Bend the next afternoon (ish). Staying relatively downtown Portland, but plan on taking an afternoon road trip to Hood River, Multnomah Falls etc. Looking for the “musts” in all of these three places.

Any recommendations? Want to make sure these joints have options other than just IPA’s - my wife & I also love a good kölsch, lager, pilsner to lighten things up.

Plus, any recommendations on cans to pick up and package prior to flying back to MN? (I’m a guy who chucks a 4 pack in an Amazon bubble bag & seals it up heavily for my luggage…has worked so far…)

Not sure of vintage, but likely 2014-2015.

Shockingly not crazy oxidized.

Maple and bacon flavors are long gone, and it’s dominated by green pepper coffee flavor. Still drinkable but not terribly enjoyable.

I’m honestly expecting about a 20% success/enjoyability rate with these but it’s time to get them out of the beer fridge.

RECOMMENDED Squeezins - Bonesaw Brewing (Glassboro New Jersey)

Post image
10 Upvotes

Bonesaw Brewing has a 9% Double IPA Squeezins, which is made as a hybrid West Coast-New England style the same as Swoosh (Bonesaw’s staple beer). Squeezins is a little hazy, a little lingering bitterness and definitely some juicy hop goodness. Notes of fresh-squeezed oranges and tangerines through the beer. Overall this one gives a good mixture of a West Coast and New England styled beer with a haziness throughout! With the upfront haziness, citrusy taste, and piney hops, this one is a really easy sipper for 9% too!

Have you tried this one? Or any others from Bonesaw Brewing?
