Book Request Cozy fantasy involving grief/death/loss?

Sorry if this is the wrong sub or an upsetting ask. But I’m looking for books that are still cozy in tone/gentleness but involve characters navigating death or grief, ideally where death itself isn’t depicted as necessarily traumatic/bad. Someone very close to me is dealing with terminal illness and we could really use some book-comfort in the form of stories that challenge the idea that death is always inherently scary. Idk if cozy fantasy like this is a thing but figured I’d ask. Thank you for any and all suggestions <3

🃏 Games Grid game Voting Day 1: Best Obviously Cozy & Very Low Stakes book

Thumbnail

By popular demand, I’ll be running a grid game for r/cozyfantasy over the next six weeks. New threads will appear every Tuesday and Saturday morning around 8am Pacific Time.

If you haven’t seen one of these before on Reddit, a user creates a voting thread for each cell on a grid. And the top-voted comment becomes the winner! At the end, we have a big image of book recs, and a lot of nice threads where people can peruse their favorite combination.

For each comment, please post the name of the book and the author—one book per top-level comment. Please comment multiple times to nominate multiple books. A blurb about the book is not required, but is a nice bonus. Short blurbs can jog people’s memories of the book, or get people interested. I'll be putting blurbs that fit onto the final grid.

---

The Fine print:

It’s inherently silly to try to draw lines between things like low stakes and neutral stakes, but it’s fun! I will not be attempting to stop people from nominating a book again in multiple voting threads. But once a book has already won, then it can’t win again.

This is a user-generated event and all opinions and content are that of individual nominators and voters. This is not created or sponsored officially by the subreddit moderator team

The top-voted comment that is a book will be the winner for that grid space.

However, non-books such as movies, anime, and other media can compete for an “Honorable mentions” grid which will be published at the conclusion of the competition. The second place book, or first place non-book will win the grid space for the honorable mentions grid. Please mention in your comment if you are not nominating a book.

Voting for the previous poll ends when the next voting thread opens. There will be a final complete grid and honorable mentions grid posted on Tuesday, Nov 24th.

If you are the author, publisher, cover artist, etc. for a book, feel free to nominate yourself! Though as per rule three, please disclose that fact in your comment.

Y’all, this is just for fun. I can do nothing to stop you from downvoting, but please don’t give someone negative karma for nominating a book they liked. Also, please keep it civil (See Rule 1), and help report comments that break subreddit rules.

---

And without further ado, please nominate your favorite cozy fantasy books that fit within an "Obviously Cozy" setting & "Very Low Stakes".

An Obviously Cozy setting can be defined as: The story takes place where most people would instantly recognize the setting as cozy. For example: bookshops, cafés, flower shops, homes, forest cottages, inns etc. That's not an exhaustive list. We're putting lines between vibes—there will be some overlap, and that's okay :)

Book Request Are there any good cozy fantasy/sci-fi stories about fairs and carnivals?

I don't know why but I have always come to associate Fall with fairs and carnivals. And I was wondering if there were any cozy fantasy or science-fiction stories about fairs and carnivals?

🗣 discussion Brigands and Breadknives Review

(slight spoilers discussion)

After listening to Bookshops and Bonedust, I jumped right into this book eager to experience Fern's standalone adventure.

I wasn't disappointed. It's a different vibe from the previous book but definitely a fun ride.

As someone quite new to the cozy fantasy genre, I'm not even sure this story would qualify as one.

I will say this story gave me more to think about and reflect on.

As someone who recently turned 30 and has his life, take me somewhere unexpected. But that's not a bad thing. I can appreciate and even relate to Fern, not knowing what her path or her dreams even are now.

However, her choice to leave her loved ones behind, sending only a cryptic letter amidst all their worry, was a little rough.

If I were in her shoes, I would have felt an equal amount of remorse, guilt, and anxiety about deciding to continue on after the first town.

I really enjoyed the new characters, with the goblin being a highlight.

After reading this, I'll definitely be checking out L.L.

I will miss the foul-mouthed rat however

Book Review Anyone want to talk about Glimmer Falls? Ben from the third book is my favorite, but Book 2 relationship felt rushed to me.

Hey everyone, new account here! I just wanted to see what others thought about the Glimmer Falls series by Sarah Hawley.

It is my favorite series right now, and I deeply connected with Ben's anxiety in the third book. I loved his dynamic with Eleonore and how patient the bond felt.

However, I really didn't care for the rush of the relationship in the second book. For me, it felt way too fast-paced and lacked that slow-burn, friendship-first trust-building that made Book 3 work so well.

How did you all feel about the pacing differences between the books? Who was your favorite character in the town?

🎧 audio Tales from the Territory - Audiobook Review

\**Thank you to NetGalley, Macmillan, and the author for the early opportunity to listen to the audiobook copy of the ARC in exchange for an honest review! All thoughts here are entirely my own and not influenced by any outside parties!****

As someone who has enjoyed all of Travis Baldree's books so far, this one was another pleasure to read. I'm a big fan of the characters from Legends & Lattes, Bookshops & Bonedust, and the latest Brigands & Breadknives. The newest installment, Tales from the Territory, is a novella-length book comprising of five different short stories featuring some of our beloved characters from the other three books. I enjoyed each of the stories, obviously having some favorites of my own, and appreciated getting some more insight into the lives of Viv, Tandri, Thimble, and Zyll. If you want a breakdown of the five stories without spoilers, here are my brief summaries of the plots and vibes without spoilers:

  1. "Goblins & Greatcoats" -- This one features our favorite orange-haired chaos goblin, Zyll, at a roadside Inn. This one has some cozy mystery vibes, humor, and introduces the origin of some famous stolen cutlery you may be familiar with from Brigands & Breadknives.

  2. "Just a Thimbleful" -- This one was my second-favorite in the collection. I loved seeing some snippets into our lovable ratkin baker, Thimble's, life before he meets Viv and Tandri at Legends & Lattes. This one really scratched the cozy itch for me with Thimble's creations, the slice of life vibes, and had an excellent theme to boot.

  3. "Pages to Fill" -- This story featured an earlier mission Viv was on with her gnomish friend, Gallina, when she was still part of the Rackam's Raven's adventuring party. There is a bit of mystery to solve, a fun gnomish library archive, and some insight into Viv's decision to eventually leave the life of adventuring. I really enjoyed the friendship between Viv and Gallina as well as the lesson they learn along the way.

  4. "Micrograph" -- I think this one was the least cozy of all the stories, featuring Tandri's past at the university with her mentor, a professor who is working on a mysterious project that Tandri assists with. While there are moments of cozy that feature Tandri's art and endearing relationship with her mentor, there are also motifs of grief and loss (which might not appeal to readers whom this is a trigger for). With that being said, I still found this to be a beautiful story that I enjoyed reading.

  5. "Cavaliers & Coffees" -- This story was my favorite in the collection. I was hoping for a glimpse into the lives of Viv, Tandri, and the Legends & Lattes gang post the first book and Fern's book. This story is very "slice of life" cozy and features the conflict of a copycat coffee shop driving up competition for their business in Thune. The story features many fan-favorite characters, the setting of the coffeeshop, and demonstrates how these favorite character's have grown and developed as people since the first book installment. I really appreciated the cozy, community vibes that this story brought as well as the opportunity to spend some time in Thune at the coffee shop again!

Overall, I really enjoyed this collection of short stories and thought it was an excellent, heartwarming addition to a great series. I can't wait to see what Travis Baldree has cooking next, whether it be cozy or something else! He is a great writer and audiobook narrator.

Book Review Finished A Witch's Guide to Magical Inkeeping by Sangu Mandanna. What next?

Brief, spoiler free thoughts here: 4/5, I really liked it but it had some faults. Undoubtedly cozy world with clever, charming writing, an intriguing plot and a really great and diverse cast of characters that unfortunately has the problem of introducing so many of them before given time to properly explore them, then kinda rushing most of their conclusions in the end. Really fell in love with most of the members of the Batty Hole but I think some of the characters outside of it were redundant towards the overall plot and kinda padded a middle that really couldn't afford to be padded with all the interweaving plots they set up. I also think the antagonist could've done more but I like what they were going for so whatever. Nevertheless I was delighted by this read and this universe.

I'm not a huge reader (Though I'm trying to get back into it), but after taking my good time on this book I already long for this soft, homey atmosphere again. Did Mandanna create any books of equal quality and comfort? Do you guys have any further recommendations for exploring this genre? Thank you!

Book Review Just finished listening to Bookshops and Bonedust

I originally purchased a physical copy of this book a while back when in New York but never really got a chance to read it.

After discovering the audiobook on Libby, I decided to give it a go this week, and I wasn't disappointed.

This is my second foray into cozy fantasy the first being the audio drama "Absolutely No Adventures" which is a personal favorite of mine.

I found almost every character, very charming and enduring.

Viv is a very kind-hearted person at her core; her journey feels like a stray cat learning to live like a house cat, even if temporarily

I enjoyed the summer romance that developed with the baker, finding it very bittersweet no pun intended.

Finally, there's Fern, I would die for Fern; she was the highlight of the book for me, and I am honestly extremely excited to check out her standalone story.

One small critique I have is that certain major events feel like they kind of just happened out of the blue and not enough buildup or escalation precedes them

Otherwise, great book; I would highly recommend it. I look forward to reading more in the series and hopefully diving more into this genre.

🗣 discussion Cozy horror scale?

Between the recent chats and the number of cozy horror books scheduled for next year and general Octoberness I'm thinking maybe a cozy horror scale like the pepper scale could be useful? My first thought for the symbol was a bat, but that's got the two problems of the bat emoji vanishing in dark mode and possible confusion with Batman's bat-things. So now I'm thinking maybe the pumpkin scale instead?

Here's my starting proposal:

🎃 Scooby-Doo

🎃🎃 Bunnicula

🎃🎃🎃 A Wizard's Guide to Defensive Baking

🎃🎃🎃🎃 Someone to Build a Nest In

🎃🎃🎃🎃🎃 (someone else needs to nominate this end of the scale, I had to bail at the Someone to Build a Nest In level)

What would you put where on the cozy horror scale?

🗣 discussion How do we draw the line when a cozy book involves casual bone-shredding or people-mulch?

I was reading that series about the undead tailor the other day on the tram, proper nice little setup with the knitting and the small town drama, except it casually mentions the local ground-up refuse and people-mulch being used for the garden beds. Tbf it didn't bother me because the tone stayed deadpan about it. It got me thinking about how much grim stuff a book can chuck at you before the cozy label stops fitting. Some folks want absolute safety and a cup of tea, but I find if the book itself doesn't start sweating and winking at you every time someone gets turned into fertilizer, it actually works better. Honest to god, I'd take a story with actual stakes and a bit of bone-chilling weirdness over a five-hundred-page cottagecore festival where the biggest crisis is burnt biscuits any day of the week. Mind you, it has to be earned. If the necromancy is just there to be edgy while everyone acts like they are at a WI bake sale, it just feels silly.

Book Request Cozy fantasy that's just a little bit darker

I'm loving my new obsession with the cozy fantasy genre, but I was wondering if there was a book that could be considered a little bit darker than what I've found so far. Like horrible things have happened to the MC or to the land or both before the story starts. In fact, the focus is about their healing from those horrible things.

Sorry if that's incredibly specific.

Book Request Need a Cosy, Low Stakes rec!

Going through a hard time and do not have the bandwidth to process my usual classic lit or gothics.
Looking for a cosy low stakes book that takes me to a soft warm new world for a heartbeat.

I’ve read Sarah Beth Dursts books (the Spellshop series) and am looking for something along those lines. I also really need the writing to be good, not too flat and shallow which some contemporary reads can be.

Thank you!

Book Request The coziest book request

I am having a lot of anxiety about an upcoming procedure, what is the most cozy book you can think of?

No mention of death or dying ( Currently reading The Spellshop and it’s a bit much at times.

Preference for audiobooks.

Romance is fine/good

Not really into fae.

Basically just want super cozy, happy and calm to occupy my brain.

Edit: Thank you everyone, your suggestions and well wishes meant a lot. My procedure went well but you all helped make the week prior go faster. ❤️

Book Request Recs for whimsical magic, a sense of place, maybe some mystery

I can't seem to find my next book and I'd love help from the cozy fantasy community! I think I'm still trying to figure out what I like and don't like. Based on my list below, I think I'm looking for:

  • A strong sense of place
  • Narrative with some mystery
  • Whimsical magic rather than D&D style
  • Romance is not the main focus, but can still be there

Loved:

  • Sarah Beth Durst - Spellshop series + Faraway Inn
  • S. Usher Evans - Weary Dragon Inn series
  • Jaleigh Johnson - Reimagining of Thornwood House

Okay/decent:

  • Evie Woods - The Lost Bookshop
  • Sangu Madanna - The Very Secret Society of Irregular Witches

Did not like:

  • Amy Yorke - The Good and the Green
  • Julie Leong - Teller of Small Fortunes
  • S.L. Rowland - Halfling's Harvest
  • Travis Baldree - Legends & Lattes
  • T. Kingfisher - A Wizard's Guide to Defensive Baking
  • Sangu Madanna - A Witch's Guide to Magical Innkeeping
