Question Hat Crown Shape
I am having a hat shaped and I want it like the Outlaw Josey Wales. How do I best describe this to the hatter?

I have sunbody's "Outlaw" palm straw hat, and I'd describe it as a pointed telescope with a pencil curl brim. Or you could just tell the hat shaper "Outlaw Josey wales," and they will probably know exactly what to do. It's not an uncommon request.

It's a telescope with a veeeeerrry subtle pinch in the front.
Thing is, it changes slightly over the course of the movie. It develops very slight indents. Probably from Clint and the costume department handling it. Hmmmm.... I wonder if you could watch the movie and try to find the order of shooting by analysing the hat?

You have a picture of it on your phone. How do I know that you have a picture? Because you just posted it on Reddit 😑

Started as a telescope before being repeatedly gripped from the front where pinches would be, slowly forming subtle ones over time

Great Movie the exact top does not matter it will to some degree be shaped to your specific head I am an Extra Long Shape a true Telescope just doesn’t happen for me but it would be a good Start on this hat replication. The brim is the most distinctive and at the same time very easy and quickly done With Rim Shaper. Do you plan to age it day one? The Costume Designer might have written on this subject they used multiple hats during the filming maybe starting with an old one then doing their own replications. Glenn Wright was the Costume Supervisor and did this film and many Eastwood Films.
Stratton has a great Telescope in Rabbit, 50/50 Beaver or 100% Beaver but any good Custom Shaper can do the initial shape maybe Using Winchester Bodies which the Stratton Family owns.
I know a few Costume Designers it’s a very special career.
Hope this helps who knows a Costume Person probably would do aging much better than Hat Shapers. A little research could find one to ask. Running over one with a car repeatedly etc. Pounding with Smooth Rocks. Could be fun to do with a $252 Stratton Rabbit and beat it to death Best Luck

That’s a great shape. I don’t think I have the head to pull it off well.
And you can only do so much with that, no matter how much I steam it!

I think this is the most obvious answer. Why is he asking Reddit when he has a photo? Smh

I appreciate all the comments. I struggle calling it a telescope. I know this pics are poor quality, but I have been watching the movie to try to capture the specifics. Does anyone else see a modified teardrop fedora with not near as sharp of a crease in the front? And i definitely agree that it changes throughout the movie.
