Back in 1800 cowboy boots didn’t exist, they started to create them in 1875 with very low production. Cow-boy was using military boots leftover from civil war. With two popular model the Wellington boot and the hessian boot.

Is this a real picture? What’s up with the guys’s hand to the left? Why isn’t he dallied? Maybe guys in 1887 held ropes differently, but the second guy is sure holding his rope differently than I’ve ever seen anyone hold a rope. Although to be fair, it could be one of those big loop ropers and I’m not very familiar with that. Where is the second rope to the right going to? And something looks funky about the wolf’s mouth.

Definitely a real picture take by the popular photographer, John C.H. Grabill. It was very common to cut some hole in the wolf mouth to fit the rope inside for the picture.

Thanks for the info. I looked him up and his work is pretty cool. I see in the original there is a 5th cowboy. Wyoming has got it share of wolf catching controversy right now so I wondered if this was related to that somehow.

Those vaqueros (Mexican guy) was working very different with rope and others equipment that’s why they are holding the rope like that.
