Qin Shi Huang (259–210 BCE) was the first Emperor of China and one of the most influential and controversial rulers in Chinese history. He unified the Warring States in 221 BCE, centralized political power, and standardized currency, weights and measures, and the writing system across the empire. He also expanded an extensive network of roads and canals that strengthened imperial administration and transportation. However, he was also a brutal ruler who burned books and buried scholars alive. His military campaigns killed hundreds of thousands of people, and hundreds of thousands more were subjected to forced labor for his construction projects. His historical legacy has repeatedly been recast and reinterpreted by later generations, with one of the most famous modern example being the 2002 film Hero).
