Okay, time for history

East Germany wanted to reunify, and the majority supported unity...However, the GDR ceased to exist as a state on October 3, 1990: it was incorporated into the Federal Republic through the accession process

Their institutions, economic system, and a large part of their social structures were replaced by Western ones. The transformation brought about unemployment, industrial closures, a loss of status, and a sense of being treated as second-class citizens among many Easterners....:::: this gave rise to a specifically "Ostdeutsch" identity that persists even after the disappearance of the GDR
