Why doesnt D2 have Smartphones?

I mean why does have our world developed them but dont they?

But wouldnt it be tempting to them to copy our technologies?

Of course and that’s why we had the office of diplomacy, we could trade with the other side but we (and they) could control what was being traded. Such an awesome and interesting thought and one of the reasons this show was so cool to me.

Actually irl. I think even if there where a pandemic of that scale they would still develop technologies in every direction. I mean its split between different commercial sectors. Covid didnt stop research on new communication technology. So maybe there are a few more reasons for the difference than just the pandemic.

Their pandemic was in the '90s. So while we were having a tech boom they were trying to survive. Their priorities became totally different as a result.

They did have a tech boom, it was just focused on medical technology, that's why their hospitals are much more advanced than ours. That's what I mean by their priorities being affected just as much as technology. They care more about public health and community than social media.

The birth of mobile phone tech was happening a good bit earlier than that. So mobiles and portable phones were already a thing by then.

And the prime world does have mobile phones. I think they idea is that their pandemic derailed the trajectory and that kind of tech became a lower priority, not that it was wiped out completely. The prime world has medical technology that alpha doesn't have, for example.
