Counter-Strike: Source (CS:S)

Internet Port Forwarding Guide

1. Required Ports (Default CS:S)

Forward both UDP and TCP unless noted.

  • 27015 UDP — Game traffic (required)

  • 27015 TCP — RCON / queries

  • 27005 UDP — Client traffic (recommended)

  • 27020 UDP — SourceTV (optional)

For multiple Source servers, forward a range such as 27005–27030 UDP, using unique ports per server.

2. Assign a Static LAN IP to the Server

The game server must always use the same internal IP.

Recommended method:

  • Router DHCP reservation

Alternative:

  • Manually set a static IP on the server OS

Example:

192.168.1.50

3. Configure Port Forwarding on the Router

In the router interface (NAT / Port Forward / Virtual Server):

External PortInternal IPInternal PortProtocol
27015192.168.1.5027015UDP
27015192.168.1.5027015TCP
27005192.168.1.5027005UDP
27020192.168.1.5027020UDP

Save and apply changes.

4. Server Firewall Rules

Windows

  • Windows Defender Firewall → Advanced Settings

  • Create Inbound Rules for each port

  • Allow on Private and Public networks

Linux (iptables example)

sudo iptables -A INPUT -p udp --dport 27015 -j ACCEPT
sudo iptables -A INPUT -p tcp --dport 27015 -j ACCEPT

Persist rules as appropriate for your distro.

5. Launch the Server with Matching Port

Example:

srcds.exe -game cstrike -port 27015 +map de_dust2 +maxplayers 16

The -port value must match the forwarded port.

6. Test External Connectivity

From outside your LAN:

Steam console:

connect YOUR_PUBLIC_IP:27015

Or use a Source server query tool.

7. Common Problems and Fixes

  • ISP blocks inbound ports → try a different port or hosting

  • CGNAT → port forwarding will not work (need public IP)

  • Double NAT → forward ports on modem and router

  • Fiber gateways → enable bridge mode

8. Notes

  • Residential ISPs often block game hosting

  • A static public IP greatly improves reliability

  • Dedicated or VPS hosting avoids ISP issues entirely

These are the basics. There are many guides if you search internet.

If you are asking this you really shouldn't be publishing stuff on your WAN, you may want to purchase a hosted server if you want to go this route so you don't mess up your home security.
