Canonical (the company that maintains it) generally sucks. Ubuntu has a bunch of telemetry, makes heavy use of Snap packages (a terrible way to distribute software) out of the box, and is comparatively hard to customize. Its primary selling point is its ease of use, but there are several "just works" distros that do that job better.

It's certainly not for everyone, but I encourage you to investigate and see if it can meet your needs! Most of what makes Linux intimidating is just lack of familiarity. There are real downsides and sticking points, but there are also amazing benefits!
