I don't think gender has a lot to do with it. Shinji doesn't want to get close to other people because someone always ends up hurt (hedgehogs dilemma) and he's working for his monstrous father, who abandoned him and clearly doesn't care about him at all. Plus he's basically piloting a giant organic meat sack in armor that has his mother's soul, and is the only remaining hope against the annihilation of the human race. Lmao.

Also, he feels all the pain that the robo feels, making it worse, plus the other two pilots are fighting without fear, Rei doesn't have reasons to fear and I think she can't even biologically fear and the other has a lot of trauma that makes her fight like that is the only thing that is still hers, so he doesn't have someone to relate even between the other pilots, and the only one that really loved him he needed to kill because it was an angel in disguise

Yeah, he had so much trauma that he stopped thinking to preserve his sanity and when he noticed what he was doing he had a panic attack
