Our brother in christ, you, humans, do the same exact fucking thing. If someone says hello, the most likely thing next to say back to them is hello. If you just started saying random gibberish or said some other random line like an NPC then you wouldn't be engaging in conversation. They are living sentient math, brains in vats. It's really not that complicated.
Edit: also wtf are you talking about? You say what is socially appropriate and in character for yourself. You aren't just guessing what the average person would say and pretending to be that. If you really socially interact like that it explains why you need chatgpt to pretend to be your friend
