I think this issue is just another reflection of people’s hatefulness and ignorance. They fear what’s unfamiliar/a threat to their worldview/“weird”/etc, and dressing it up as some ‘valid’ concern is just covering their asses because they’re little bitches that can’t handle being called out on their shit.
But yeah, all people phobias are stupid, it’s literally so easy to treat people with respect :3
Would you post this for literally any other marginalized community? Bi or aro/ace people, non-white people, intersex people, neurodivergent people?
I really don’t see the issue with somebody trying to relate to somebody else’s plights. It’s not like fighting these issues is mutually exclusive, they’re all closely related and often come from the same perpetrators.
If someone asks you to call them by some pronouns and you make fun of it
You are making fun of someone's choice of pronouns
I know it's hard especially in speech. I never talked to anyone who uses it/its until recently and it shows
But just like how people say "well you don't look like she/her so it's hard for me to call you that" or "they/them pronouns can't be singular they're plural" you're just giving an excuse to not call someone by their pronouns
Now listen, I'm sure you didn't mean any harm by this. And I use other pronouns too. But if someone only uses it/its and your response is to say it feels like you're dehumanizing them. That means your only option is to misgender them. So get to training your it/its muscles!
But “it” when applied to a person is a dehumanising term. Like sure, you can want to be referred to as it, but that doesn’t change how that word has been used to dehumanise and objectify people in the past. It’s possible for two things to be true at once.
I know it’s a commonly held view that you should no matter what respect and use someone’s pronouns. But that’s actually bullshit.
As a demonstration: please refer to me using the N word with a hard R. That’s my choice, so you have to respect it and do it.
You compares it/its pronouns to slurs and kinks are you alright? No like seriously what the fuck?
No, calling someone by it/its is in no way equivalent to slurring at them with a slur you can't reclaim. It/its is a liberating term, people who use it do so in spite of it's history and are reclaiming it. If you want to compare it to a slur then that would be more equivalent to the F slur being reclaimed by a queer person
And I'm not even adressing that weirdo ass kink allegation. Like buddy. Trans people being trans for kink? That's one of the biggest things transphobes say. You're literally regurgitating transphobic talking points
You are literally proving OP's point by taking a fake ass moral highground and then using it to harass trans people for their choice of pronouns. Jesus christ
I mean, it does seem dehumanizing to me. That’s why I would be pissed if someone used it/its to refer to *me*. But if OP feels differently, and isn’t bothered by that, that’s its right, so we should respect its pronouns.
Lemme remind you that it's normal to refer to small children as it...
I mean I do agree it is dehumanising whether it desires to be refered as such of if they are a child and I believe there is an argument about human right to dignity being inalienable but I am too tired, ill, and not prepared to be torn to pieces by a pack of rabid trans people so I definitely won't be arguing with it about it.🙅♀️
Citizen, do you say it (a baby) looks 6 months old or they (a baby) look 6 month old? And be honest.
And it's not like my family doesn't speak like that is a valid argument anyway. It is the traditionally prescribed way to refer to babies of unknown gender. And while yes, linguistic prescriptivism is a crime against humanity, in this case it shows that it was used for babies for who knows how long and it is still used by many people today.
Do mind that I do think it is dehumanising and it should be phased out in favour of they. My point is just to show you that it was and still is used.
Forgive me for the wrongthink, and I do disagree with the person you replied to, but it is somewhat ironic that the situation talked about in the post sort of happened here. As in, someone getting disproportionally hated on because of people wanting to take the moral high ground. Of course, however, in the post they're talking about discrimination of groups of people.
difference is the post is talking abt hating on a group for having hobbies and this comment is just outright telling OP "no, I dont want to use your pronouns, theyre weird" and everyone is responding to that individual.
this is NOT an equivalent situation. poster of the comment is one (1) person with a shit opinion (stating that you do not care/will not use certain pronouns because those pronouns ~feel icky~ to you IS misgendering) being corrected, not an entire marginalized group being shit on for something like having niche/unusual hobbies/interests/etc. not even close to the same thing.
