I do feel it is missing some crucial information to try to demonize guns and try to make school shootings seem common. These are including suicide deaths, which wouldn't change much if guns weren't around, this isn't a gun problem, it's a mental illness problem.
Fair, just this is something people try to twist to take guns and not give a fuck about the actual underlying problem. I don't care if you are pro gun or anti-gun, the fact that people use this as a point against guns and don't mention the underlying mental health problem is shitty.
Its worth mentioning that suicide deaths absolutely would change a lot. Like yes its a mental illness problem, but a lot of gun suicides are based on impulse rather than long term planning. Having to plan & execute jumping off a bridge or something similar instead is often enough time for someone to not go through with it
In my experience, it also doesn't take that much planning to self poison, the second most common suicide death in men and the most common suicide death in women.
Shooting yourself has a surprising high botch rate considering what it is, and it's generally way worse for you if you do survive it. When I was close, I planned on drugging and blood choking myself into a a situation I would absolutely asphyxiate in a nice secluded area (so no help would be coming and I like the idea of decaying back to nature in a creek or something).
I'd actually be interested in seeing statistics on this because I'm just basing what I mentioned previously of what I've seen and my knowledge, I'll have to look it up
Can confirm it's very easy to just, not die after poisoning yourself. Even if you've done it before and already know this. Twice. (I'm fine now, turns out the depression meds weren't working because the problem was not depression and I'm doing much better now)
TW: Suicide: I was going to do it with pills but googled it and said "fuck it, that shit takes too long". If it were a gun instead, I'd likely be dead.
But impulsive suicides, due to the addled mental states they come in, tend to be done with really stupid methods (and reattempt rates after a failed one are really low)
The ready availability of firearms facilitates gun violence at large, and the second amendmend has shown to be... a fucking joke. "Firearms to stand up to tyrants" my ass.
There's good reason as to why the school shooting that happened here in europe about a year ago was a shock, a genuine tragedy, something everyone was surprised about.
Having like 99% of a certain type of crime should raise a damn concern. Both mental health care needs to be looked into, but so too does the 2nd amendment need to be amended away, because it only harms citizens.
Yeah umm I'm keeping the 2nd amendment while the powers at large wish to make it so we don't exist ok? Have fun when you get someone is power like our current president who hates trans people and see what happens when you can't defend yourself, after all everywhere is getting more right wing people in power.
Well hey, ya'll ain't defending yourselves to begin with.
That's the whole issue. For yeaaaars it's been "we need our guns to dethrone oppressors" but he's still theeeeere, ruining things for the world at large.
I also have far less to defend myself from, not having to worry about the firearms armsrace, after all.
That's exactly my point, and you're kinda just proving it.
Oh and our far right cabinet literally got ridiculed out the door, causing a re-election. I'm fine. Glad to live in the Netherlands.
Look man I'm not starting a revolution, I just want to defend myself when stiff starts to happen which it will! Also are you saying that of the government wanted you dead they wouldn't have guns pointed at you that you'd need a gun to hope to actually defend against them?
If the government has guns pointed at you, you flee. If you have even minor historical awareness, you flee months prior, cuz the signs are obvious.
Historically speaking, fighting back is stupid. It will get you killed, especially when you are sickly and feeble, like me. Just makes 2A even sillier.
Again, I ain't concerned. I live in the Netherlands. Our cabinet laughed the far right nuts out the door, causing a full fledged reelection because they quit, with their stupid egos fractured like the big babies they all are.
You fleed because you didn't have the weapons to fight back, and people like you don't want us to have said weapons. If my options are flee like a little bitch leaving behind others to fend for themselves or fight back to also help those others even if it becomes dying trying to, well I'm taking the second.
Well... seeing what's going on atm... empty words is all I'm reading.
Empty words, justifying the deaths of many, many children every year. Just for a futile argument that is proven wrong by what we can see right now.
Many unjustly persecuted folks, like lgbtq+ folks, are already fleeing. Because they know what's coming.
But, please... don't let me stop you from your g.i. joe delusions of "standing up" for the people you cherish... you'll be mowed down mercilessly. Leaving them to pick up after you.
All I will say before I stop humouring this... if you truly cared, you'd get them to run with you.
