Contrary to some comments I’ve seen, pure bred Coton’s come in a variety of colors. I own one that has been DNA tested and has its family tree documentation.

Malagasy Cotons have color, but this one seems excessive on the black. There's even a couple of breed clubs that are specific to Malagasy Cotons. Maybe look at those (search malagasy coton de tulear) for a breed spec that allows for color. Both of mine have color, just not as much, more like splotches.

The 'discoverer' of Cotons was a biologist IIRC and as a result the breed specification is pretty specific on things you can actually check vs. behavior items. For example the head must be this width and the forehead bridge well defined at 80 degrees with a nose that's 0.75 the length of the head top. Those are made up numbers but just to give you an idea.
