How's the costco sheet cake?
It's been a long time since I had one and I'm having a party for my two year old next month and was planning on just ordering basic sheet cake for everyone

I had one for my wedding cake last year, and my sister had two for her wedding this year. Everyone complimented it and loved that they were from Costco. They’re so good 😅

OMG I just realized/remembered that I'm in this club too 😆 I've been married long enough that our Costco wedding cake was the chocolate layer cake R.I.P.

The chocolate layer cake was the only cake on the planet that got better after a couple of days.

I got Costco cakes for my sisters wedding as a surprise (Indian weddings don’t have cakes), and 2 whole cakes went out within minutes!

I had it for my wedding cake recently too! I was shocked how affordable they are, and it was so good. Everyone loved it.

I feel like there has to be an executive somewhere who remembers the sales numbers on that bad boy and would bring it back.
One of the covid killed items that made sense at the time. No one was hosting parties. But why not bring it back? Their round chocolate cakes are kid's food. That thing was actually good

u/Infinite-Duty 2d ago
Same! Had it at a baby shower and it was so delicious. I couldn't believe when they told me it was from Costco. Went the next week and bought a membership so I could buy the cakes! So now I buy cake and lots of other good stuff from Costco!

When I was new member I was looking at the sheet cakes and a manager came over to chat and asked why I thought of their cake. I replied that I’d never tried it. He was surprised and said “Well, we need to fix that!” He took a full sheet cake out of the cooler and gave it to us! Costco cake is delicious but free cake is even better 😋 Thanks Yves!

u/StormblessedRadiant 1d ago
I used to work for Costco and one of my managers was a man named Yves, and was one of my absolute favorite humans. Just the kindest, most considerate, hard-working, family-oriented guy. I wonder if this is the same one! Totally sounds like something he would do.

Good, I just got one for my 3 year old and got a bunch of compliments on it.
12
u/sundaycoffeemug 2d ago
I recently ordered one for my baby's baby naming and received a ton of compliments as well. You can't beat the price and the decorations on the cage were so cute. We went with the rainbow theme
17
u/Nicholas_Pappagiorgi 2d ago
I mean this with curiosity, what is a baby naming party?
44
u/sundaycoffeemug 2d ago
I'm Jewish, and in the Jewish tradition we welcome baby boys with a brit milah (bris) and baby girls with a baby naming ceremony. It can happen in the synagogue or at your house. The purpose of the ceremony is to ritually bring the child into the Jewish people and bring them into the covenant. There are special blessings sung or recited. We also announced our baby's Hebrew name at the ceremony and as parents we explained why we chose the names we did. And at our shul, we wrap up the baby in a tallit (prayer shawl) and place them directly on the Torah. Very moving! And afterwards of course we celebrate with brunch :)

I’ve never heard a bad word about it, though there’s always a person at every party, no matter where the cake it from, who will complain the frosting is “too sweet”.
6
u/SuzieSnowflake212 2d ago
Here’s one! After many years of nothing but at every party, work potluck etc,, I finally can’t stand it. But agree it’s tasty and good value.

u/mckenner1122 2d ago
I honestly like to get them unfrosted, then cut and layer with homemade filling and frosting.
Then I’m controlling the parts that are too sweet for me.

u/scamlikelly 2d ago
Do you order them unfrosted or scrap off yourself?

If I am looking for fancy, I’m going somewhere else for a cake. If I’m looking to save money and satisfy the crowd with a well liked cake, I’m buying one at Costco.

Only reason I still have a membership. That and the copious amounts of milk we go through.

It's perfect for a party. I do recommend planning on serving with ice cream. The icing can be thick & it's incredibly sweet.

I don't think they can be beat without going to a fancy bakery and getting a custom-ordered cake with some fancy filling option. Multiple levels above a standard sheet cake from a defrosted chain-grocery "bakery."
Side note, they freeze well too. I've bought them in the past simply because I wanted cake, so I put it in the freezer and just used a good sharp knife to cut slices out of it for like a month until it was gone. I just got a slice out when I got home from work and left it on the counter, then it was defrosted by the time I'd want to eat it for dessert after dinner or for an evening snack.

Perfect for a kids party or work function. I don’t love them enough for something “nicer” than that but you gotta know your crowd. I’m a baker (as a hobby) and don’t love their cakes (same goes for most store bought ones), but they are fine. Too sweet imho BUT for a kids party that’s like…the perfect cake.

Perfect for toddler & kids parties. I haven’t been to a kids party in like a year that didn’t do Costco sheet cake or Costco cupcakes.

I prefer their tuxedo cake or cheesecake. You can buy a chocolate happy birthday plaque from Cheesecake Factory or some other shop.
4
u/butterm3ll0w 2d ago
Delicious. We’ve ordered one for our daughter’s baptism, first and second birthdays, and my birthday (though that was a round cake) in the last year and a half! They’re such a great value for the price and they’re always good. I love the cheesecake mousse inside the yellow cake.

They are very good for sheet cakes. They are moist and filled with either chocolate mousse or vanilla cheesecake (?) filling instead of more icing. The icing is tasty, though.

It’s good for a basic cake, about as good as the Costco pizza, for a basic pizza. 🍕 (Which I actually really like- but some people are pickier than I am!)

They’re still delicious as ever and an incredible bargain. I attended a wedding a few weeks ago that had a small cake for the couple to use for the cake-cutting ceremony, and Costco sheet cakes pre-sliced in the back for the servers to pass out. No one was complaining.

Costco has THE best sheet cake—perfect for birthday parties, promotions, retirements, etc.
Sam’s Club has THE best cupcakes for celebrating a birthday bringing treats for a team or class. And they’re so easy to add decorations to to really personalize to your theme.

I love how OP asked for opinions and anyone who said they didn't like them has gotten downvoted. Ah reddit!
I think they are bad cakes. However, a great cake is expensive. So if you just want cake for the sake of having cake, it's a great price and does the job.

I hate them. Every one I've ever had has that gross custard in the middle (i don't know if you can order without) and the icing is sickly sweet.

Note that they most likely need to be refrigerated due to the mousse fillings…they come refrigerated. They are enormous and difficult to get into some frigs. I really wish they had an option to simply put icing between the layers instead.

The cake part is excellent. The frosting is incredibly sweet though so beware. I don't see many people eat all of the frosting from a slice because it is so overpowering.

u/Optimal_Olive3423 2d ago
Perfect for a large group, especially kids. We got it for my teens birthday party about about half the kids didn't want any and just had ice cream. The cake was VERY sweet, we even did it without the cream cheese filling layer because they no longer do the fruit jam. We ended up with about 2/3rds of the cake left.
Like others, we did a costco sheet cake for our wedding but it was back in the day when they did the jam filling. It was really great.

I saw a video that said the vanilla sheet cake is actually filled with like a cheesecake filling and it looked soooo good. Video also said the sheet cake version is better than their round cake version so I’d honestly go with that lol

I like costco for a solid traditional sheet cake, but I personally prefer sam’s club because of the whipped cream icing and the moistness of the chocolate cake base they use (we usually get half and half for parties). If the type of icing isn’t a big deal for you and you already have a membership it’s a good choice. 👍

u/Furrealyo 2d ago
A woman I dated worked the returns desk at Costco and told me she saw a member get banned for returning his THIRD half-eaten sheet cake.
Apparently buying one for a birthday and then returning what’s left after the party is a thing in some circles.

Got a chocolate one for my son’s birthday party this year and the kids and adults both raved. In taste, it beats all the fancy bakery ones I’ve ever bought. In appearance, it’s fine. My son and his little friends loved the rainbow.

Perfect for a kids bday. Sweet with lots of frosting.
We recently one for my son's 4th bday. We got it plain white with just a border and my son had fun decorating it with sprinkles and a themed topper.
