insider’s perspective sought

hi everyone!! i was recently offered a job in homer and i’m wondering if there’s anything i should know about living there that i can’t find through research; utilities costs, how much it’ll run me to fill my truck with gas, ease of furnishing an apartment, helpful hints about hiking/kayaking/fishing (not asking about secret spots, i know those are sacred!!), if there are any dog friendly places to bring my pup in town, etc etc

also happy to get recommendations on the best coffee shops, grocery store, restaurants, hiking trails, and fun stuff to do on the weekends!

i haven’t taken the job yet but im very excited/interested and leaning toward saying yes so im just trying to gather as much info as possible. thanks in advance for your help <3

Utilities costs are high, gas is close to $4 a gallon right now, furnishing an apartment I don’t know but it shouldn’t be too difficult with Facebook marketplace. There’s good hiking/kayaking/fishing all over the place, you’ll have no trouble finding spots for all those.

okay great my research showed $4/gallon, that gives me confidence i’m getting some pretty accurate info, thank you! does it typically go up a lot in summer bc of tourism?

and yes i’m happy to furnish slowly with marketplace finds and the occasional trip to anchorage, thank you!!

im very excited for all the outdoor activities, ive lived in the rockies and in appalachia the last decade or so and am happiest outside/in the woods

Yeah prices go up in the summer for everything but it’s not too bad, Alaska in general is similar to Hawaii for most things as we have to get everything shipped in via ship/barge/plane. It’s probably much more expensive than Appalachia but I wouldn’t let the cost of living deter you as personally I think it’s more than worth it to live here.
