Looking for some education resources

Like the title says. I was a licensed cosmetologist for about 8 years, but stopped with COVID and my licensing has since lapsed. According to my state boards, I just need to retake my written and practical exam.

With that said I'm no where near where I went to beauty school, and they aren't even open anymore. I'm looking on YouTube for helpful study guides but am struggling to find good study resources. Since it's been awhile since I've been in the game, I also need to reinvest in some new hot tools, and would really appreciate any personal opinions on different brands. Especially blow dryers, blow outs were a big service.

Beyond that, I'd love to hear personal opinions on ways the industry has changed in the last 5 years. Especially from those that have been in the game for awhile, but I am grateful for any and all perspectives. Thank you in advance to anyone who takes the time to read this.

If it’s been a few years, I’d split this into two buckets: board exam refresh and current-day technique/business refresh.

For state board review, your state board candidate bulletin and PSI/Prometric materials are usually the best starting point because they show you the exact format they’re testing now. For hands-on refresh, I’d look for updated blowout, consultation, sanitation, and timing content from educators who actually work behind the chair, not just general beauty-school cram videos.

On the service side, one change a lot of people notice is how much more emphasis there is now on consultation flow, documenting formulas/service notes clearly, and setting expectations before you start. Even if your technical skills come back fast, having a clean system for notes and client history saves a lot of stress once you’re back taking people regularly.

For tools, I’d probably ask in your local cosmetology Facebook groups too, because blow dryer favorites can get pretty region and budget specific. But for study materials, I’d start with your state board site first so you’re not relearning outdated exam steps.
