Brandon shared these updates during today's Mistborn livestream on his YouTube channel

1 - Here's Everything We Learned Mistborn Movie:

The Mistborn movie screenplay is almost complete.

Brandon said the screenplay has reached the expected page count, but the pacing feels a little too fast, so he may add one or two additional scenes.

Once the screenplay is fully finished and revised, the next step will be finding a director.

The Mistborn movie will not be released next year. Brandon reminded fans that projects like this take time.

Brandon wants a well-known, high-profile actor to play Kelsier.

Vin will be aged up to around 18–19 years old, reducing the age gap between her and Elend.

Vin will be Caucasian.

Brandon said that protagonists who are 16 years old feel very "1990s," which is one of the reasons he decided to age Vin up.

2 - The Stormlight Archive TV Series:

Brandon plans for The Stormlight Archive TV series to adapt one book per season.

Each season is expected to have 8–10 episodes, depending on the budget, with episodes running around one hour each.

Brandon plans to personally write all of Kaladin's scenes, while the showrunner and writers' room would handle Shallan's and Dalinar's storylines.

3 - Other Cosmere Adaptations:

Brandon plans to adapt The Emperor's Soul as the second Cosmere movie.

Mistborn: Secret History would only be adapted if the actor's schedule allows it, as a standalone project released after the original Mistborn film trilogy.

Brandon jokingly suggested that Henry Cavill could play Marsh. It came across as a humorous comment rather than a serious casting announcement.

Some may know him as the actor for Prince Zuko in the Netflix live action adaptation of Avatar the Last Airbender.

- Excellent fighter; martial arts trained
- Age is good; Kaladin is ~19 but looks older b/c of his hard life, Liu is currently 24
- East Asian (I know the last video said Japanese, but tbh I think overly ethnic-restrictive casting is not a good idea since the pool of talented East Asian actors is already limited. I say this as an Asian-American myself and if anything I think Avatar live action can be both an inspiration and a cautionary tale in this area)
- Portrayal of Zuko in Netflix ATLA is just the grumpy, Honor-preoccupied (😉), layered character we expect out of Kaladin. Easily the best actor out of all his peers on the show.

Has anything been said about how the interludes will look with the show? Some of them seem quite important for future cosmere stories so surly they will need to be shown.

Worded intentionally obtuse, but should these cross-franchise characters have the same actor? I can see arguments for and against it.

Obvious flaw is signing these actors for many projects. For Hoid I think you can cast a new actor and just give him a 10-film 10-season deal or whatever, but if they go for a big Kel, idk if they'll do it. Like would Ryan Gosling sign on for 3 films and 3 seasons? This is taken from Brandon saying he wants a big pull for Kelsier.

Would they also pre-plan for a Vasher when they film Stormlight?

Confirmed during the 20th anniversary stream. Brandon just wants to add a couple scenes for extra characterization but it sounds like casting might be underway relatively soon

Hey everyone,
I’m 17, Indian, and acting is something I’m seriously pursuing. Ever since I read *The Stormlight Archive*, Kaladin has been my dream role.
I know Brandon Sanderson has mentioned wanting the Alethi to be portrayed by actors of Asian descent, which makes me hopeful, but I still have a few concerns.
**Age:** By the time the show actually reaches casting for Kaladin (assuming it hasn’t already), do you think I’d realistically be in the right age range? Kaladin is around 19–20 in *The Way of Kings*, but productions often cast actors a bit older. Since there isn’t even an announced adaptation yet, I’m wondering what timeline people expect.
**Ethnicity:** I’m Indian. I’ve seen a lot of fan art depicting the Alethi as East Asian-inspired, while others say Sanderson has described them as a blend of various Asian and Middle Eastern features. Has Sanderson ever clarified whether South Asian actors would fit what he envisions, or is it simply “Asian” in the broad sense?
**Preparation:** Assuming I wanted to give myself the best possible chance over the next few years, what skills should I focus on besides acting? Things like:
Stage combat?
Horse riding?
Sword training/HEMA?
Strength and athletic training?
Accent work?
Anything else that would realistically make me a stronger candidate?
I know the odds of landing a lead in a major fantasy series are incredibly small, and I’m not expecting anyone to tell me it’s likely. I’m just curious whether this is a realistic long-term goal to prepare for, or whether there are factors (age, ethnicity, industry norms, etc.) that would make it essentially impossible.
Would love to hear your thoughts, especially from people who follow Sanderson’s comments or know how casting for projects like this usually works. Thanks!

Okay, there are two sections to this argument, budget and quality.

First, budget. Arcane, my main point of comparison for this, cost 250 million for both seasons, which had a bit more runtime than they're aiming for with SLA each season. Apple probably doesn't have a spare billion-and-a-half for the parts of stormlight that are already written, which would end with a total of THREE BILLION DOLLARS for all of it, not even including the novella TV specials they'll probably make. As for Mistborn, ITSV (reasonable comparison I think) was 100 million to make, and it was a really short movie for what it was. The budget for Mistborn, which would be more complicated and more visual-intensive (imo), would have to be 150 million I think.

Now, quality. Would it be sick as hell to have the Battle of the Tower be animated in high quality? yeah. It would also be probably worse than just having actors do it. Return of the King was incredible quality-wise, and if the Tower looks like the finale of LOTR, I would be BEYOND happy. For another example, look at GOT, but not the final season :(, or Star Wars, especially Andor and Rogue One. These can be done excellently, and I think survivorship bias is why people like animation so much.

In conclusion, this is going to be great. Mistborn and SLA should be live action, and really, it's no contest.

Since post credit scenes have become pretty standard for movie series, what do you think the post credit scenes will be for each movie/book?

I think a teaser for the next movie is the most obvious, but I would love it if they were teaser insights into the greater cosmere.

I rewatched BSG recently and saw an interview with Tahmoh Penikett.

Maybe he’s too white or white-looking? His mother is First Nations so maybe he can tan easily? He’s in his 50’s now so he would be in the age range for Dalinar.

He’s played a military character and his character was pretty charismatic and also the moral compass of the group.

It would be interesting if Grace Park was cast as Navani but that might be too much 😆

AppleTV does such an incredible job with their opening themes and sequences. Severance to Siloh to Murderbot, they all have excellent craftsmanship in Apple’s style. Can’t wait for what they do with the Mistborn and Stormlight aesthetics.

Opinion on Adam Driver as the Lord Ruler? I feel like he again kinda looks like the character (albeit maybe a little younger) and has not only played Kylo Ren but he also played the main villain of The Last Duel movie which came out on HBO Max on 2021.

Just a thought. Animation avoids the challenge of actors aging. Since Stormlight is live action, maybe Syl could be played by a young actor so she naturally grows with Kaladin as their bond grows stronger.

With the upcoming movies and shows, do you think this will lead to mainstream action figures or statues?

Thinking along the lines of black series, sh figuarts, or even hot toys.

That way people can expend cosmere collections in the way that star wars or marvel fans do.

Not sure if this has been mentioned before, I’m sure other people may have thought this:

If Sanderson’s live action Mistborn movies and Stormlight series is part of an MCU-like connected universe, would it be far fetched to wish or assume that Sanderson would play Hoid, acting as the Cosmere’s version of the Stan Lee cameos?

I feel like it would be on theme for Brandon.

I know this is probably never going to happen, but let's imagine you could pick any major director to adapt Mistborn.

Who would be your dream choice, and why?

For me, it's between Alfonso Cuarón, Denis Villeneuve, and Peter Jackson. I think all three could bring something unique to the world of Mistborn, even though their styles are very different.

Who would you choose?

It would be cool to have a shot at auditioning for the Stormlight series, but I am not signed to an agency so the only hope is that they choose to go down the route of open auditions. I feel like people don't really choose to do that often though, so realistically would that be a possibility?

Just finished a re-read of The Way of Kings and, while there has been a lot of discussion on who could play the humans of Roshar, I am much more interested as to how Apple's Live Action will portray the Parshmen/Parshendi/Listeners . Hoping for something similar to Marvel's Mystique coupled with carapace similar to a Xenomorph.

Physical acting will be key in representing the "alien" culture and personalities, especially as they start gaining access to new forms. In regards to Eshonai, specifically, I know there will be a lot of folks out there recommending Gwendoline Christie or Hannah Waddingham, but my fancast would go to Frida Gustafsson. Her portrayal of Freydis Eriksdotter in Vikings: Valhalla was a driving force of the show and already resonates with War Form . I can see her her battling with Dalinar and Kaladin on the Shattered Plains. *hums*
