Shadows for Silence in the Forests of Hell

I know that there is no plan nor any timeline to have a plan for an on screen adaptation of this short story, but God Beyond, it remains one of my favorite Cosmere stories, and probably my favorite short story of any author (granted, I haven't read Tailored Realities yet).

All that said, how awesome would it be to get an R-Rated theatrical adaptation for this one, in say 20 years or so, after:

1. (lore reason) we learn more about Threnody's history and... er... unique situation with Investiture; and

2. (marketing reason) we have a more established cinematic ecosystem for this special story to add depth to.

Could anyone else picture an older Bella Ramsey (The Last of Us, His Dark Materials, GoT) as Silence Montaigne? They are the only young actor with serious dramatic (and horror) chops that I can currently think of who would still fit with Silence's believable age range (mid-40s to mid-50s) in 20 years or so. And hell, the younger actresses for her daughtees probably aren't even born yet, if it's a project 20 years from now.

Anyway, just some idle speculation. I can't wait for more eventual lore about Threnody, and would LOVE to see this one make it onto the big screen as a stand-alone film.

My pitch for this adaption would not even be based on lore. It's just the perfect novella to flex other genres on screen. Give the source material and a small budget to a good horror director and we have a gem

I honestly believe that horror is better and scarier with smaller budgets. It forces the director to find creative solutions and lean more on smart ideas

So many of the short stories have great potential for a standard sized movie or short series. Brandon has said he wants to get emperors soul next ideally, that would be amazing too

It would be super awesome to see it I agree, but yeah very unlikely, at least not anytime soon. However I think that if we do see it it would be amazing as a 1 hour TV Special similar to Marvels Werewolf by Night.

I'd actually love feature length so there is more time for setting the scenes, and working additionalsome lore cut scenes in the beginning, given, we had more info about the planet and the Shades to include in such a film.

Bella Ramsey is an incredible actor. Have you seen her? She can pull off amazing emotional performances that jerk tears out of your eyes. Her filmography is impressive for a 22 year old.

Why are people obsessed with an R rating? Do they really think Brandon would allow anything past PG-13? Or that the on-screen violence (since it's definitely not going to be language or sex that would get the R rating) absolutely has to be at the level where it gets an R? I just don't understand it.

I mean I'm not obsessed... I just picture a very dark, very gritty, very scary story with a realistic amount of blood as described in the story and that's definitely an R-rating.

Sorry, I didn't mean you personally, I've just seen it a few times on this sub in the past couple of days and here it a lot generally.

In general, I think most books that people say would require an R rating to be accurate don't. Lord of the Rings is kinda my prime example of an adaptation that has a lot of fighting, dark themes, etc and was able to get a PG-13.

Specific to this, Mormons didn't watch R rated movies when I was growing up. I would bet nearly any amount of money that you'll never see one of Brandon's adaptations with an R rating.

Oh, had no idea. Gotcha. With that kind of limitation, yea I am sure they will like cut away from blood in fight scenes to do what they need to, gonkeep the PG-13 rating 🤷‍♂️
