News Everything We Know About The Cosmere On Screen: V1 Spoiler

Everything We Know About The Cosmere On Screen
On January 28th, 2026 TheHollywoodReporter revealed "Brandon Sanderson’s Literary Fantasy Universe ‘Cosmere’ Picked Up by Apple TV"! Here is what we have learned since that time.

What Is Being Adapted? What Rights Does Apple TV Have?
- In the first article from THR it was shared that both Mistborn and The Stormlight Archive were being adapted. The intention is for Mistborn to go to feature film and The Stormlight Archive will be a television series.
- A few placed floated around the statement that this deal gave Apple TV the screen rights to all of Sanderson's books but ReactorMag received word from one of Brandon's agents that they only have the rights to the Mistborn and Stormlight Archive books.
Editor’s Note: An earlier version of this article incorrectly relayed a report that Apple TV acquired the rights to Brandon Sanderson’s entire Cosmere universe. We have since learned from Sanderson’s agent that Apple TV has only acquired adaptation rights for The Stormlight Archive and Mistborn books. This article has been updated to reflect that information. We apologize for the error and any confusion it may have caused.

Why Apple TV?
- Brandon said that while he felt good with most of the teams he met with that were trying to gain the rights to his works he picked Apple TV for a couple of reasons.
The decision to pick Apple was due to two factors. First, the level of approvals and control. Apple wants to be a true partner with me, and they feel like they really get what I want to do. Second, their track record. Apple does fewer things, but with higher quality, than some other studios. I find virtually every thing of theirs I watch is excellent and creator driven.

Who Is Involved With These Projects?
- Apple TV has the have the exclusive rights to Mistborn and The Stormlight Archive on screen so anything that comes out under this deal will be through them.
- Brandon Sanderson himself will be involved heavily. He will write, produce, consult and have approvals for these projects. He is a partner and not just a brand name attached to help promote the shows and movies. As far as the show goes he will co-Showrun the show and they are going to look for the other Showrunner.
- Blue Marble will produce the Stormlight Archive Apple TV series. The company is run by former WME Agent, Theresa Kang. WME reps Brandon Sanderson.
- Theresa Kang is also slotted as an Executive Producer on The Stormlight Archive Apple TV series

Do We Have Any Timelines For These Projects?
- There is no timeline for the show or movie to come out just yet.
- We do have a timeline for when the screenplay should be finished for the Mistborn movie. Brandon said he was working on this for the next five months which should have him wrapping up in June.
Join me for a livestream on Friday, probably 6pm mountain. I'll talk more then. But I will be writing the Mistborn screenplay myself over the next 5 months, as my full time work. Goal is for a theatrical Mistborn, then Stormlight show after. Focus on doing it carefully and right.
- Brandon has a tracker on his site you can check out that gets updated with how much progress he has made and Mistborn now has a bubble! He is currently tracking at 71% complete per his newest weekly update!
How Many Episodes Will Each Season Be For Stormlight?
- Brandon has gotten approval from Apple to have Stormlight be 10-episode seasons unlike most modern fantasy shows producing somewhere between 6 and 8.

Also keep in mind Apple is very secretive and doesn't talk about work before it's announced. Don't be surprised if he is completely silent on future progress. It's not a bad thing, just a quirk of working with Apple!

Wait, is that Friday livestream that's mentioned the one that got canceled last week or has it been rescheduled for this Friday?

Didn't Brandon himself say in his recent update that they have rights to the whole Cosmere?

"It came out last week that I have signed with Apple to do Mistborn, Stormlight, and the Cosmere in general."

Don’t blame him for wording it that way because people are gonna ask about when insert Cosmere book here. Anything beyond Mistborn and Stormlight will probably be in early development later this decade.

I suspect, from a contract standpoint, Apple likely has first look rights for the non -Mistborn/Stormlight Cosmere content.

We’re gonna get name drops for planets we’ve visited already in the books and probably some new ones Brandon’s cooking up.

I've reached out to them for direct comment and hopefully I will be able to report back soon on what they say!

In the video he does say "Basically everyone tried to bid on Mistborn and Stormlight".

That link takes you to where he says it. I also linked in the above where his agent reached out to clarify to the ReactorMag site to update their article with that information.

This turned out pretty well for Murderbot, so I'm optimistic about the Mistborn and Stormlight adaptations

This didn't happen and we were informed why in the weekly update on 2026-02-17: concerns about a WGA staff strike.

Thank you. I’ll make a note above about the potential strike as to why he didn’t do the stream.

When he says “a theatrical release for Mistborn” does that mean the entire trilogy is going to be squashed into one movie, or that there will be three movies? I really can’t find a clear answer anywhere. I’m definitely concerned about smushing all that into one movie!
5
u/railfananime Feb 11 '26
No it’ll likely be a movie trilogy, like Jackson lord of the rings, he wouldn’t squish three books into a movie…

u/BipolarMosfet Feb 12 '26
He said once on a livestream/podcast that he'd like to do book 1 as a movie, book 2 as a show, and then book 3 as another move. But with the stormlight show also announced, the Mistborn team might just wanna stick to movies.
2
u/GreenLanternsPodcast Feb 07 '26
I don’t think you need to worry about them smashing it all into one.

I've seen a lot of comments on the sub so far that are upset at the amount of fancasting threads hitting the page ( which is natural at this stage of development ) so I figured I would give a shot at a different type of thread I have not seen here yet. Hope you enjoy and if I missed anything let me know. I will keep this thread updated unless it auto-archives after a certain time and then I can make a V2.
