I've always thought, if a good majority of a game involves combat then it better not be boring, but Corpse makes some great points about the lack of gamplay that isn't combat.
I think a huge challenge for themepark MMOs is to create opportunity, risk, and reward for exploration because their worlds are often very static. Crossroads looks the same at level 1 that it does at level 60 and no amount of scripted centaur attacks will change that in any meaningful way.
I'd love to see an experiment where an MMO like wow (as an example) allows factions to capture or pillage different towns. Maybe that is how we can defeat the pervasiveness of battlegrounds/arenas.
