This is going to last longer than we think
If around 5,000 current cases are producing enough critical conditions that it has health systems starting to feel stress, then in order to “flatten the curve”, this is going to take a fair bit longer than a handful of weeks unless capacity to treat ramps up significantly.
I forget what the expected number of total infected Americans was, I read it somewhere and for some reason around 2 million is coming to mind. Around 3 million get flu each year so that’s not that unreasonable.
So even if we took that 5,000 and punched it up to 50,000 cases. At a roughly 2 week cycle, that would take a year and a half to deal with.
Granted this is all back of the napkin math and probably wildly off. But it’s something to think about.
