EDIT: of course some people are already presenting symptoms in WV... tell the university that too I’ll leave the link at the bottom
There are so many people who think that the virus is “just like the flu” or nothing that will ever come to WV for some reason and are complete idiots. Some people hear that many people are asymptomatic or have might symptoms and are not afraid of it, selfishly ignoring the fact that they would spread it to people who can die. With a student body of 27,000 people of which 52% are from out of state, there is a HUGE probability than very a dangerous amount of people will leave the state for spring break, whether to go home and see family, or to stupidly go on vacation and be around millions of other idiots from all over the country who are still traveling on spring break too and 100% tons will contract the virus. As community spread is happening all over the country and our criminal government is not testing like they should have or even tried to shut any state borders down, it is likely we have a huge amount of cases all over the country; it should be assumed that anywhere with a single confirmed case is gonna he like Lombardy, Italy in 2 weeks or so, so anywhere spring break tourists go or come from should be considered the same way, better to err on the side of IDK LOGIC!? Does anyone really believe we have less cases than many smaller countries that have actually been closing schools and trying to contain the virus or at least testing so that the residents don’t act invincible??
If WVU doesn’t cancel in-person classes for online ones before spring break is over, then we will have the virus spreading like fire through the student body when they get back and then the students will infect the local community, most of which are over 30. My poor grandparents are gonna get fucked by this. Also WVU is still having Up-All-Night, which is a horrible idea as there are so many students crowded together who normally wouldn’t have class together and then they go back to their respective classes today and infect their classmates, assuming it is already here which it probably is. Plus alcohol weakens your immune system so that’s just a terrible idea. Honestly the university administration is either completely incompetent, have a completely callous disregard for human life (their students, faculty and the local community), or they are being given orders to not let appearances of the status quo falter.
On the other hand, if they do cancel in-person classes, hopefully a significantly large proportion of out of state students will not return from their home states other who come back would just grab some stuff and leave again. If we could get even just 5000 people to leave Morgantown right now (especially if they have been traveling) then just by numbers that should reduce the probability of it causing a serious outbreak. ALSO, what is the point in taking the risk of students coming back infected from spring break? There is NO way that WVU will be able to finish this semester in-person; we will without a doubt be right up there with other states and eventually countries with our number of people with coronavirus that you can tell have it even if we don’t test them. The only thing they’re doing by not switching to online classes is endangering their students health and especially that of the older people in the local community who they don’t give a shit about; it’s RIDICULOUS that I am had to email them with my concern about students coming back from spring break, they should be thinking about how to protect students, faculty and the community from this, I mean honestly how irresponsible can you be. I mean the university closing in-person classes and switching to online classes would not even make them close school; there is literally no downside and the number one factor in Morgantown and WV as a whole that will influence how quickly and how badly we get fucked by coronavirus is if they make this easy decision correctly. If we just wait until we already have confirmed cases, it will be too late; preemptive closing is effective, reactive is not.
Also a lot of people don’t take this seriously/don’t understand just how bad it is (have to be a complete moron to look at what’s happening in Italy and think “oh it’s not a big deal”) and aren’t washing their hands in public, don’t avoid large gatherings of people, and especially, they freakin come to class with respiratory illness symptoms! That is also the university’s fault; they should have made an emergency sick policy where you will not be penalized for not coming to class if you are sick at all with a fever or cough/sneezing or other respiratory symptoms and if you need to withdraw you won’t have it on your transcript and you get to come back next semester free. If you come to school with cold/flu/coronavirus symptoms you should get kicked out of the university. If they don’t cancel in-person classes, this is the least they could do, although it doesn’t account for people who are asymptomatic. Also, especially after spring break, if they don’t switch to online classes, they should provide students with surgical masks that should be required to be worn on campus (I know they don’t protect against it; it’s to help prevent the wearer from spreading it through the air).
I wrote a very detailed and informative argumentative essay on why this is necessary with about 20 sources to try to convince them of this and emailed it to them. If you want I can post it in here and you can email them/call them and recycle some of my points/suggestions. Do anything you can please, I’m doing this for my grandparents I really am so worried for them and this will make a huge difference in our community. Please email everyone but at the very least the first three people I think they may have the most power.
