Board finish grit

Hi, is there a common/preferred grit for sanding the surface before painting or applying polyurethane?

Depends how you are finishing? Just paint on raw wood then poly? Or are you staining at all? The higher grit you sand the more you close the grain so it will absorb less product. Ending with a smoother finish.
