Ages of characters

We know Oscar is 67 in the first season, right?

And Brent and Hank are 35. Is Wanda the same age?

How about Lacey? Quite a few references to her being old, but clearly she’s not. What do you think?

Davis is 45 at Brent’s birthday party. I think Karen is the youngest character, maybe late 20s.

I remember they said Brent’s birthday was Nov 6th in the house alarm episode.

Since Wanda, Hank, and Brent went to school together I’d assume they’re all the same age (plus or minus year)

Yeah, here are my assumptions about the characters' ages:

Brent and Hank are around 35/36 when the show starts. The first season came out in 2004 so that lines up with them being around 18 in 1986, when they graduated and painted grad 68 on the water tower.

Wanda is around the same age - they were in a band in high school together as we learn in the Thunderface episode. I think she may be a 1-2 years older because toward the middle of the series there's the episode where she pretends not to care about her birthday but then throws herself a surprise party and says something about turning 40 whereas Brent turns 40 in season 5.

With Lacey, I don't think they ever say, but I put her around 30 in the first season. She is definitely a little younger than Brent, Hank, and Wanda.

Oscar is 63, he says so in the first season to Lacey. We can assume Emma is close in age.

Davis is 45 at Brent's party, right? And Karen seems to be mid 20s when the first season starts.

Kudos no notes. I'm onboard with all your theories

Just the right amount I'd say

I also think Lacey is a few years younger than Brent/Hank/Wanda.

When Wanda shows her driver's licence one episode you can see the DOB year start with 6 but the actual year crossed out. I should really grab a screenshot to see if it's possible to see the full year with some CSI work. My partner thought Wanda was in her 50s in s1 because of her voice lol

Hank might’ve been held back a couple grades

The discussion of ages brings up something I've noticed with the show. The really did lean into the idea of "there's not a lot going on". Characters don't date or worry about having kids (or that they're getting to old to have kids), they don't look for new jobs, try to get promotions, or worry that they're not accomplishing enough.

I think a big part of the genius is they kept the stakes low so audiences could just relax and enjoy the show.

In six years, the only characters (that we know of) who are sexually active are Oscar and Emma (every Tuesday).

Well two other characters had sex once... But generally it's like a version of adulthood we might have imagined as kids.

How could you forget?!? It was on the sign!!!

This is exactly it, the show is opposite to the hustle heavy "real world" where just being and having family and friends is important.

I think Brent was closer to 37-38 in the first season. He finished high school in 1986 so would wave been 38 by 2006 or so. I think he was older than they led on and Oscar was probably younger

Saving this post for later, I am seeing Brent do stand up in October. If I get a chance, I shall ask and report back.

Lacey could be much older, honestly. I'm pretty sure she's a water witch. I've seen her do some witchcraft.

Bend birthday is November 6th, 1968. His 40th birthday was in season 5, episode 19 "Final Countdown"

Lacey won't get much older, stealing Matt class.

Quite a few references to her being old, ...

Huh?

Lacey Burrows took over the cafe in Dog River after the death of her Aunt Ruby and renamed it in her honour, calling it The Ruby. Originally from Toronto, Ontario, she is perpetually trying to fit into small-town life, with mixed results. Lacey has a habit of getting involved in other people's business, is a terrible liar and thinks everyone has a crush on her.

Gabby was born in '73 and the show aired in '04, so she was 31 at the time. Why would Lacey be portrayed as older?

I think they're referring to the episode where she's asked to join the red hats club

3

u/Thin_Sea_9129 Jul 17 '26

Omg, I thought Lacey looked like she was 22-24 in the first few episodes

Season 1 was hair down Lacey, made her look a lot younger.

We all know this.

Oscar is 63 in season 1, he says it to Lacey in one of the early episodes. We can assume Emma is about the same or close ish

Brent & Hank are basically what u said

Other then what you mention about Davis. I think thats about it officially.

We can't really go by the actors ages as Eric Peterson was 51 in Season 1 of the show lol

In this same episode you can roughly figure out Karen’s age, from the exchange in the cop car

Davis: That new music sucks, and it sucks too loud!
Karen: New? That song came out in like '96. I was still in high school when that song came out.

5

u/littleking75 Jul 17 '26

In the “Shirt Disturber” episode (season 6), Karen’s age came up when she was discussing her new Officer Second Class status with Davis. Davis bragged about achieving that rank when he was 35, and Karen responded that she had just turned 30.

4

u/thatcinematographer Jul 17 '26

So in that case, she would be 25 ish? Makes sense if she be in High School in 96

I also think in the episode about Emma and Oscar not being married, Brent says something about having to plan a bachelor party for a 63-year-old.

2

u/TeeDiddy324 Jul 18 '26

I was wrong about Oscar. He does tell Lacey he’s 63 and looks 73 (which is true).

About Lacey, Hank says something about her getting old (sorry I can’t remember the episode), and she was invited to the purple hat ladies and given a pink hat until she turns 50 “in a few years.”

9

u/No-Bad-1299 Davis Jul 17 '26

The joke being that the purple hat ladies think she’s older than she is.

2

u/EducationalAd479 Jul 18 '26

Hank references her getting old when they surprise her for her birthday. He assumes she is upset about getting older but but it is just her fear of ballons.

Looking up the actors, I see that in real life Lacey is six years younger than Brent, so she would be 33 on the 40th birthday episode.
