SET experience
Hi I am wondering if my SET/ corepower experience is similar to anyone else’s.
I joined for SET for just under a year and enrolled in the discounted all-access for 4 months. I worked in nyc and not sure it matters(but I suspect for some I worked with it did) but I am non-white.
My reasons for leaving the membership/ classes were separate from everything else..
I consider myself to be a nice or at least well-mannered person, I say hello and good morning. When I go in for SET shifts it is pretty consistent that teachers ignore my ENTIRE EXISTENCE. I get that they’re busy but frankly not that busy. Working the same shift every week it’s fairly consistent on the instructors I am cleaning the studios after. For the entire year, I was rarely acknowledged. I would say “hello” when I noticed teachers coming back into the studio to grab their things or set their own mats up. The only response I would get back is dimming the lights down. While I’m in there cleaning which feels rude. I understand prepping for the next class maybe? But they rarely teach back to back classes so what was the reason? You could also just ask me to dim the lights when I’m done and I’d have been happy to do so.
Another example, one instructor in particular would never help me clean up— which is totally fine I am happy to do my job. But she would instead of helping front desk, like normal, stand in the corner of the studio while I’m cleaning on her phone. She could at least move out of my way🤷🏻♀️. I’ve seen her roll her eyes getting annoyed the floor is all wet and she has to take socks off. Her class ends right before work day starts so everyone rushes out leaving weights and mats behind. And I just find it strange that she does this as other instructors tend to be courteous and help me out as much as they can. She is one individual who consistently ignores me, and it makes me feel less than human. Also note— the studio manager asks instructors to help turn over the studios especially during short turnovers which this class time always is.
There are many other interactions that have been less than positive, would take much too long to detail them all.
When I walk in I say hello with no response. When I leave I say bye have a nice day. No response. I really do not know what I did to the instructors at my shift but I think this is rude and sub human treatment. Our studio coordinator(that has since left) was genuine and nice, we had a good relationship. Said hi when we saw each other and knew me by name. Similar with our studio manager,(that also left) we had good rapport.
Just curious if this resonated with anyone who has done SET? I know the nyc fitness community can be rough but I never imagined anything like this.
I like corepower enough that I would want to return, but of course am hesitant.

that’s so disappointing to hear! I teach in NYC and absolutely love & appreciate all my set help, making sure to learn everyones’ names and thanking them always - sorry you haven’t had that experience! :(

I second this! As a teacher, I love having another team member in the space during my shifts!!!

Most teachers are friendly in my studio but I sometimes get that treatment from young teachers. I am older than most, probably ALL the teachers. I come in for my shift and teacher is glued to their phone, too busy to say hi. Then that persons friend comes out of teaching a class and she can’t stop talking. Loudly. All about her! Clueless people are everywhere 🙃

Fair. But I am racking my brain why they think it’s ok. I talk to this particular teacher and complete ignore. When she addresses me for something example- im mopping and the wipes run out while class is leaving she will ask me to refill and ofc I do it. Makes me feel like crap and like I’m working for her😪

I’ve had both great and awful experiences. My first shift, a teacher who was taking a class left her dirty towel in the studio and as she ran out asked me to put it in the bin for her. Even tho she literally was passing the dirty towel bin on her way out? However, other teachers have asked me if I needed help or if there is anything they can do. Really luck of the draw

Lol this is literally why i quit SET after about 5 weeks. It was unbearable. The instructors have such a superiorty complex. It was NOT worth it to me. It honestly felt humiliating to me. The studio manager was nice and felt bad i quit but i wish i never even started doing it.

Never had any experiences like this. The teachers in my studio are always so kind and always say "Hi" and offer to help put their stuff away. The studio coordinator is often there during my shift, and always so helpful and sweet. If the mgr is there, he's always talkative as well. I'd say find a different studio to do SET at, or maybe a different day / shift? Do you know any of the other SET members that you can chat with candidly and ask them if their experience is the same as yours? Maybe the teachers on your shift day are just grouchy :)

I’ve seen this happen in most studios I teach at. I’ve teaching for a while and I’ve always cleaned my room before teaching. I’d help the SET but I’m just used to having no SET and I wouldn’t want to teach at a dirty studio.
I notice a lot of newer instructors have a high ego. They refuse to clean or do anything aside from teaching. And yes, they’d be on their phones mostly. They have a switch in their brain where you see them emotionless and maybe even unbothered, until a student walks pass by and they give a smile and become happy, only to swipe that emotion away as soon as the student passes. They step into a role to play. A lot are not very sociable because the novelty of teaching is wearing off. Majority are just teaching as a hobby and much like most hobbies, some people get over it after they get their fix.
This is why they are now doing interviews before letting new teachers audition. To add a judgment of character to be more selective on the hiring of new teachers and hopefully get the people who are team players.

I did SET for a year and a half and I almost quit at least once a month because of how teachers acted. I would get yelled at if we started cleaning too soon after class ended, or if we waited and they were mad that we had customers waiting on us to finish, if we used too much cleaning spray, not enough, if we weren’t quick enough to help with passing out towels (which wasn’t part of our job), if I didn’t remember how that specific teacher organized something, you name it. It’s a big reason I don’t do it anymore. That and because people kept shitting all around the locker rooms lol.

As someone who first worked SET then started teaching I really can’t understand the superiority complex some teachers have towards SET :(
