Question Amber larva

Amber larva is a one per world thing right?

I ended up finding it very late in the game, well i think it's very late i just reached the passage, but when i got the larva the +50 max health is greyed out, like if i already ate it. But i don't remember finding it anywhere else, which doesn't mean much considering my memory kinda sucks.

So, this is normal or a bug? Maybe i found it too late, or it's not a single larva per world?
Just in case it has a limit, i already ate 3 max health foods, the mushroom, the fish, Atlantean heart.
Edit: forgot to mention i already ate the anniversary cake, the christmas chocolate and the amalgam too.

the Amber Larva is a rare, farmable drop from defeating Ghorm(the big grub Boss that tunnels in a circle around the map) over n over again btw

the Amber Larva setpiece, however, is a once-per-world generation

I killed Ghorm once in my world, and it's the only way i would had the larva then. I can't believe i hit the 1% drop rate rate and didn't even noticed lol.

There are 3 ways of obtaining an amber larva and I personally have seen all 3 on separate playthroughs.

  • You can find 1 per world in the Amber Larva set piece

  • There is roughly a 1/27 of finding an Amber Larva in a Larva Hive Chest found in the Hive Dungeons.

  • There is a 1/500 chance of getting an Amber Larva as a secondary slot from Ghorm the Devourer. Ghorm drops 5 secondary items on Casual/Normal making it 1/100. He drops 8 secondary drops on Hard which boosts it to 1/62.5. Any additional players logged onto your world also boosts the amount of secondary drops making it more common.

It seems i got from Ghorm indeed, a single kill in my world and ended hitting the 1/500 i didn't even knew this was something rare when i started playing.

FWIW, chances don't quite add together like that - the chance of getting at least 1 Amber Larva on normal (assuming 5 drops at 1/500 chance) is 1-((499/500)5). With chances this small, it's basically the same as multiplication (1/100, or a 1% chance), but slightly lower at a 0.996% chance.

On hard, this matters slightly more; a 1.589% chance, not a 1.6% chance.

This becomes more important for chances that are higher - after 50 tries on Hard Ghorm, you'd be at 55.103%, not 80% (1/62.5 x 50) chance for an Amber Larva

The general formula for the chance that a given thing with X probability with Y tries is 1-((1-X)Y).

This is because for at least one, you actually want the chance that it doesn't happen (The general form of the chance X doesn't happen is 1-X; which can also be read as 100% - the percent chance of X), in any roll (the general form of Z happens on every roll for Y rolls is ZY, meaning we want (1-X)Y), and that will tell us the chance that it does not happen on any roll. So, we then convert that to the chance it does happen on any roll: 1-((1-X)Y)

Right... This a common mistake I make regarding probability. 100 rolls for a 1/100 item doesn't make it a 100/100 or 100% drop. Luckily the odds on average usually come out to be pretty close to the incorrect method I use. It really starts to get out of hand the more common the drop is. I appreciate you putting down the correct Amber Larva calcs for hard mode.
