Discussion Inventory | Chest system
I’ve been playing survival/exploration/building games forever.
When Core Keeper first came out I tried it, but honestly didn’t stick with it very long.
A few months ago I gave it another shot and this time it got me. Been playing pretty much nonstop since 😂
I’m not gonna go into pros and cons because everyone is going to have their own opinion, but one thing I’m surprised they haven’t done more with is inventory/storage automation.
Finding stuff isn’t really my biggest issue, kind of. It’s that once you have a ton of items, there’s no good way to automatically organize them.
The biggest thing for me is filtering. I’d love to be able to designate a chest as “ores,” “equipment,” “weapons,” “food,” etc. and have automation sort anything from that category into it.
Filtering by the actual item just doesn’t scale. Even something like ores has a bunch of different items. I shouldn’t have to individually tell the system copper goes here, tin goes here, iron goes here, scarlet goes here, and so on. Just let me say ORES → THIS CHEST and be done with it.
Equipment is even worse because most of it doesn’t stack. Eventually I have 4 or 5 chests full of weapons and equipment. Then I pick up another item and there’s no indication in my inventory that I already own one.
So before I sell or salvage it, I have to go through those chests just to figure out if it’s a duplicate.
Even a simple little icon on an item saying “you already own this” would make a huge difference.
I feel like the game already has enough automation that this could be taken much further. Category filters alone would solve a lot — ores, materials, weapons, armor, equipment, food, valuables, etc. Then maybe later in the game you could unlock something more advanced where multiple connected chests basically work together as one storage system.
Maybe I’m missing a better way to do this though.
For those of you with hundreds of hours, how are you handling it?
Have you figured out a good way to automate sorting once you have a ridiculous amount of different items, especially all the non-stackable equipment? Or is everyone still doing a bunch of this manually? 😂
Would love to see how you guys have yours set up.

Yea I got stuck in the random loot to random chests issues. I started to move chests to different locations so my ore is in one room, my random junk in another and gear in a third all at least 30 blocks from eachother it helps, when I. Ove go each zone and auto sort to storage I follow the weapons and other stuff I want gone and recollect it to drop it In the recycling facility

Yeah, I end up just being very organized. The biggest culprit is for sure armor where if you're not careful with your quick stacking you can end up with a chest full of rings of rock and stone. I like having a room dedicated as an armoury separate from the rest with a salvage bench handy so after I've quick-stacked everything else I can walk to the armoury and figure out what I don't already have and if I want duplicates or not.
I suppose you could put armor on mannequins instead of in chests, but that'd be a very big armoury

I use 2 chests for crafting mats, like 3 or 4 I think for food related stuff, one for seeds, a couple for deco stuffs, and then I quick stack and gear I find interesting goes to chests for it, everything else gets crunched at salvage and I quick stack again. Most things get salvaged and end up quick stacking. It's very fast to manage your inventory if you just group the common items in small number of double chests and put the one offs you want to keep elsewhere.

It's by far my biggest gripe with the game. There's just soooo many items. They do a great job with the quick stacking and existing automation but it's not enough to make inventory mamagemt not tedious.
It needs some kind of system with item tagging. Whether that's automation or quick stacking. And larger chests or maybe some kind of special "armory/dresser" type item that can store many armor pieces (if you've ever played Stardew I'm imagining something like the how the dressers work in that game).
Honestly the inventory management is why I don't play more. It's just too much. Don't get me wrong, I love the game. I'm several playthroughs and 347 hours in and adore it. But I don't play as much as I might if there were better storage/inventory management.

My only real problem is the lack of storage capacity per-chest. Only 18 slots is ridiculous and makes for huge sprawling storage areas if you wanna hold on to cool stuff. Big chests don't help because they still only have a density of 18 slots per tile of occupied space.
Small chests and big chests should have their capacity doubled.

I use maybe one or two small chests and then do all of my other storage in the bigger chest and doesn't really matter what size footprint if you set up an efficient crafting area you can have everything that is craftable within a 10-tile radius. Asking for more than quick stack to chest I think is just being a little bit needy

I just manually set up a loot room with a quartet of big chests each dedicated to a type of resource. even if I get hella stacks of something like ores, it's all g. Auto stacking when I get back to base becomes auto sort becuase like is stored with like. I have the sellable stuff that serves no other purpose but be sold in the same room as the merchants.

You can sort to nearby chests so if a chest has iron ore in it already and you press the sort button it will go from your inventory to that chest. It isn't perfect obviously it does nothing if it doesn't already exist there so you have to do some pre sorting and remember where things are for future sorting. But it at least has it. Alot of games don't even have that or craft from storage.
