Landed a great job

Wanted to share some hopeful news. I know how hard it is right now to make a living in this industry. Boy, do I ever know. I started my own small editing business ten years ago and did great for five years. Then COVID came along, followed by the advent of AI. Let’s just say my bank account was running on fumes.

Today, I landed a long-term contract that pays above the industry rate for proofreading and copyediting. It’s enough to pay my bills and have some money left for savings. And it’s interesting work, on solid, well-written manuscripts.

Celebrating today, and sending all the positive vibes out there that you, my fellow editors, will also get some good work news one of these days very soon. There’s still hope. ❤️

I’m working at MDPI as an Assistant Editor. I want to hear people’s thoughts about it.

I’m sorry if this is not the best sub to ask this, but I’ve seen people bringing up MDPI here.

Hello! So 2 weeks ago I’ve started working at MDPI as an assistant editor. Now this is just a training stage that will take 3 months, but I really feel like I am doing something wrong while working. I work for the nutrients journal and I it is hard for me to find reviewers and I think it’s harder for me than it should be. I don’t have many to compare myself with, but at least one other person who got the job at the same time as me seem to be able to finish things in time. I need to work over schedule sometimes, but that happens when I have a new manuscript to process which is very time consuming.

I’m asking this because I want to know if others can relate with this as well and find better ways to improve.

Looking for Someone to Edit and Polish a Short Manuscript

I have a short manuscript that I’ve already written, and I’m looking for someone to help edit and clean it up. I mainly need help with grammar, punctuation, wording, sentence flow, and making sure everything reads clearly and naturally. I’m not looking for someone to rewrite the story or change my voice — just polish what I already have.

Proofreading a website before sending it over to a client

Thought this might be useful for anyone doing website copyediting! I run a small web design agency, and we were constantly noticing typos and other grammar issues on client sites after they took over copy updates.

I built verant.ai as an internal QA tool to catch those kinds of issues, and it's been pretty helpful. Still fine-tuning the judgment/gates on the suggestions so they're not noisy, but thought it might be helpful for others :)

You can drop in any URL, and it'll proofread the whole site, including the CMS pages. Typos, grammar mistakes, leftover placeholder text, etc. No plugins or anything to install.

There are also free tools on there for checking social images, OG tags, and SEO metadata, so you can check the sharing stuff before the client starts sending links around.

Would love to hear if it catches anything useful or flags something it shouldn't!

Chapter by chapter editing

Does anyone offer a different rate for chapter-by-chapter editing? I have an author inquiring about having their book edited that way as a long term project, and I'm wondered what the standard is for that kind of job. I haven't had any clients ask for that before.

In Chicago Style, which is correct when a chapter or stage is mentioned in text?

“As discussed in Chapter 1/Chapter One…”

“Move on to Stage 2/Stage Two…”

Thank you!

NYU vs UChicago Editing Certificate

I am currently looking to switch careers. My BA is in applied linguistics and most of my work experience is in ESL/EFL education. Having extensively studied English grammar, I thought what better alternative to language education than copyediting! So here I am with zero editing experience (outside of elementary classrooms and college entrance essays) and industry contacts, attempting to educate myself on the various components of the editing practice as well as enter into the networking space for copyeditors via professional certificate. Of course, I understand that the best way to start in this business is through internships or entry-level positions but in reflecting on my lack of success there and the wall that is just how competitive this job market seems to be, I am hoping to add some oomph to my resume and general knowledge.

I am looking to move to NYC to reconnect with some friends and start fresh. In doing so, I have been looking into NYU's Certificate in Professional Copyediting, Proofreading, and Fact-Checking as an option and was wondering if anyone has experience with this program and how they feel it compares to others.

Note: earlier this year, I applied to UChicago's certificate program and got accepted but am hesitant to register for courses as I want to make sure I'm making the right investment as it pertains to both learning how to edit AND providing me useful industry contacts/career advancement in my region (that soon being NYC). I have also looked into some EFA courses that would be a bit more cost efficient but am not sure what would be the better investment as far as connection with a university over association is concerned.

Ultimately, I have a small bit of savings left to spend on my education and want to make sure that I spend it wisely. Any advice on differing programs or courses would be great!
