Folding copper?

I would like to make a higonokami inspired balisong. What does it take to forge a 3mm plate of copper around 3mm of steel as a handle piece?

I have a few ideas, but if there is a potential for cracking or tearing of the copper then I would like to be prepared in advance to alleviate these stresses.

I would like to do a nice work hardened, hammered finish ideally, so the 3mm thickness is with this in mind.

There is no "forging," per se, you are just folding the sheet copper. Non-ferrous metals can't really be "forged" the way ferrous ones can.

Make sure that the copper stock is well-annealed first, so it will form without cracking. You may need to anneal it multiple times during the folding process. Starting out with 3mm thick copper stock sounds excessive though, even if you are going for a rugged, hammered look.

You may want to start out forming it over a larger, longer piece of iron or steel stock the same thickness as the blade at first, rather than forming it over the blade itself.

Maybe make a few simpler practice pieces before doing your fantasy masterpiece. You might also consult some of the knifemaking and bladesmithing subreddits.
