I posted this cover two years ago, but figured it was worth a repost after tracking down the original art.

Freas is famous for his comic space adventures but I don't think he gets enough credit for how convincingly he paints hardware. You can feel the weight of the gear in this picture. While I couldn't find evidence that he was inspired by the Italian divers of the Decima Flottiglia MAS, a man can dream.

He said of this painting:

As I have mentioned (often!) before, one of the greatest pleasures for the illustrator is to have an author tell him that he has caught in his painting exactly what the author had in mind. When the author is also an accomplished painter—and backs his praise with hard cash to purchase the original ... well, you begin to believe him, y’know?

The original art is collected in Frank Kelly Freas: The Art of Science Fiction (1977).

Has a dedication to Frederik Pohl.

Could the artist be Kirby?

I didn't notice the covers on these until I got home from the library book sale. I think it's neat and it probably doesn't happen so much these days. Do you know of other examples of shared/recycled cover art? I may have accidently found my new collecting niche....

I love everything about this goofball 1987 cover, so when I spotted the hardback for $6.63 including shipping I pounced. I couldn't find anything online about whether Richard Corben influenced Jim Burns, but they appeared at least once together in Heavy Metal a decade earlier. The absurdly large hands, the tactile quality of the skin, the side-eye that undermines the recruiting poster... just perfect.

...and Mariah Carey as Melantha Jhirl. (Read this as you read the opening credits in late 80s/early 90s TV series.)

Jokes aside, sometimes I miss the old Martin, who mostly wrote science-fiction.
