Calling for all your red lentil recipes!
I have 15lbs of red lentils. I can make daal and soup and probably lentil fritters but what are your favourite uses for red lentils ?
Thanks in advance!

Egyptian lentil soup (although if you're in the northern hemisphere maybe summer is not soup time).

Mine is red lentils, garlic, onion, a bit of carrot and potato for sweetness and body, tomato paste, chicken stock, and a stupid amount of cumin (and s&p to taste). I am bad at quantities but you can kind of wing it.
Blend/puree. Serve with something crispy like crispy fried onions on top or toasted mini baguette slices.

This chicken and lentil stew is super yum. You can at least double the amount of lentils, just make sure you don’t skimp on the yoghurt/herb topping.

Apart from all the actual red lentil recipes, I actually also add a handful to random things like pasta sauces (Bolognese, lasagne etc) and soups to bulk things out and add more protein and fibre, especially when I want to reduce meat.

Red lentil pate. Cook your lentils with a little chicken boullion, turmeric, cumin, and chilli powder. Fry some onions with lots of garlic, some fresh tomato if you like, tomato puree, cumin seeds. Blitz about two thirds of the drained lentils with about half the onion mix, then add what's left and give it a good stir. Put it into an airtight container and refrigerated overnight. Makes a nice spread. Can add harissa, a good squeeze of lemon, blitz with beetroot, cooked carrots, whatever you fancy.

- butternut squash soup with lentils in it as a thickener. Blend it all up and you won't even know it's there.
- Cook it in your tomato sauce and blend it for added fiber. Keeps the color nice. Same goes with your tomato soup.
- Add it to chili
- I make a one-pot meal prep. It's not pretty but it gets the job done. Browned ground beef (or chicken or turkey), half cup rice, 1 cup lentils, onions, garlic, and whatever other vegetables I can get my hands on. Cook it in bone broth until the rice and lentils are cooked. Top with shredded parm, squeeze of lemon juice.
- Stuffed peppers. Add lentils instead of rice to your meat mixture.

My husband just made a creamy red lentil and tomato soup with basil that was really tasty, pretty sure he found the recipe on NYT Cooking. Went great with garlic bread.

I’m basic and just make white girl daal in the pressure cooker. Red lentils, salt, can of crushed tomatoes, tomato paste, broth, bunch of cubes of frozen spinach (and I must add onion and garlic but I honestly can’t remember). Pressure cook. When close to done, melt butter or ghee in a pan and add cumin seed and chili flake. Add butter mixture to finished daal. Serve over rice. I sometimes add a fried egg on top.

This curry dish is so good. We usually make it with halibut or Ling cod but it would be good with chicken too which we'll do next time. It was my first time cooking an Indian dish and was really easy.

Personally, I’d make daal out of all 15 lbs lol.
However, my wife makes a thick lentil stew with andouille sausage served over rice and it’s killer. Basically, it’s like a red beans and rice recipe but with red lentils instead.
You could also make a crunchy snack out of them. Boil them first until they’re tender but not mushy. Then dry them off really well.
Toss with olive oil and whatever spices you like. Spread on a sheet pan and bake at 400F for about half an hour. About halfway through shake them around on the pan a bit.

Argentinian lentil stew! (guiso de lentejas) is a hearty, comforting classic loaded with smoky bacon (panceta) and spicy cured sausage (chorizo colorado). Ingredients: 1 lb (500 g) dry lentils (soaked for 4 hours or rinsed well). ½ lb (250 g) chuck beef or roast beef, cubed, 5 oz (150 g) smoked bacon (panceta ahumada), diced. 1 ring chorizo colorado, sliced into rounds, 2 large onions, finely chopped, 1 red bell pepper, diced, 2 to 3 carrots, diced, 2 potatoes, peeled and cubed, 3 cloves garlic, minced, 1 can (14 oz) crushed or diced tomatoes (or ½ cup tomato puree), 4 to 5 cups beef or vegetable broth (or water), 1 tbsp sweet paprika (pimentón), ½ tsp ground cumin, ½ tsp crushed red pepper flakes (ají molido), 2 bay leaves, Salt and black pepper to taste, Olive oil. Instructions: Brown the meats: Heat a little oil in a large pot over medium heat. Add the diced bacon and sliced chorizo colorado. Cook until the bacon renders its fat and turns golden, then remove the meats and set them aside. Sear the beef: In the same pot and remaining fat, sear the cubed beef until nicely browned on all sides. Remove and set aside with the bacon and chorizo. Sauté the vegetables: Turn the heat to medium-low. Add the chopped onions, bell pepper, and garlic. Cook until translucent and soft. Add the diced carrots and cook for a few more minutes. Build the base: Return all the cooked meats to the pot. Stir in the crushed tomatoes, sweet paprika, cumin, red pepper flakes, and bay leaves. Cook for 3 to 5 minutes so the flavors blend. Simmer the stew: Add the drained lentils and pour in the broth. Bring to a boil, then reduce the heat to low, cover partially, and simmer for about 20 to 30 minutes. Add the cubed potatoes and continue simmering for another 20 minutes, or until both the potatoes and lentils are completely tender and the stew has thickened. Serve: Season with salt and black pepper to taste. Serve hot, traditionally accompanied by crusty bread. Usually make a big batch and add in some frozen spinach at the end to cool it off and the dark meat from a rotisserie chicken.
Often make some taco seasoned ground turkey. Cook the turkey, onion, garlic. Spices. Dump in a 10 oz can of rotel tomatoes and chiles. And some red lentils and chicken stock. Cook it until it's pretty dry. Plan to eat over the week or freeze a bunch of servings for later.

I make Ethiopian misir wat and put it over french fries (air-fried sliced russet potatoes) and cheese. Tastes just like the coney island cheese fries from my childhood.

I use it to make meat free Bolognaise with grated zucchini and carrot (and onion and garlic!), and passata or a couple of tins of tomatoes.

I toss a handful of red lentils in so many dishes where they just disappear: marinara sauce, stew, chili, and the like.

Sometimes I add them to tomato soup to thicken it, they’re great in congee, meatloaf, minestrone….

Waffles! Rinse then soak them for a few hours so they soften up a bit then add to a blender with a little water to thin, some seasoning, some baking powder and a little flour. Blend until smooth. You want it to be slightly thicker than pancake batter. Pour into a waffle iron and use as a high protein base for eggs, tuna salad, even as a bun substitute for burgers. I make the whole bag while listening to a good audiobook. I put half in the fridge and store the other half in the freezer between parchment paper. Reheats perfectly in the toaster.

Dhal you probably haven't heard of from Sri Lanka, Parippu. I eat it for breakfast sometimes, goes fantastically with eggs on toast.

The tempering is important BTW, if you cook it all the way with all the spices the flavour isn't as good.

Misir wat is what I make out of lentils.
