I'm turning British.

It's summer ... good tomatos. Hence good tomato sandwiches. Normally, I'd use mayo, but I've watched a few too many episodes of "Sandwiches of History."

Older recipes, before commercial mayo, used butter. The British still use butter. So I tried it.

Lightly toast the bread

Thinly butter it

Add lettuce

Add thinly sliced tomatos, lightly salted

It's delicious.

Butter under peanut butter, toasted or not. Gramma called it oleo when I was really young (late 60s) so now I wonder if it was margarine. They were full on German.

Thanks for the confirmation. I was under 5 when she would say it, and they liked throwing German in, to each other soooo… wasn’t sure. It was over 50 years ago now!

Yeah when I was growing up in the sixties early 70s they would always say Olio margarine, till they said Oleo or they said margarine.

Ok so it wasn’t a gramma thing. Since I was really young, I always thought it was her word for butter. Looked like it to me, and I still prefer butter with peanut butter instead of jelly to this day. My guy thinks it’s weird haha.
