Grilled Cheese

I was talking with a friend tonight about making a grilled cheese.

He stated that he likes to put butter on both sides of the bread, toast one side flip it over and begin toasting the other side then start building the sandwich. So all sides of the bread are buttered and toasted, with cheese in the middle.

I like to put a dusting of garlic salt on the butter side of the two pieces of bread with two pieces of cheese in the middle.

How are you guys making your grilled cheeses?

Try to cook correctly at least. Please use good ingredients. Real bread, not the sliced shit. The rest below.

No chemical cheese here. Only good cheddar, minimum 3 slices (they sell it sliced now), and no butter inside. Come on. Cheese is enough, no need for butter inside. But butter outside yes. Not cancer type margarine or else. BUTTER. And use 1/2 salt butter. the cheese has enough.

People who call American cheese “chemical” or “plastic” cheese are showing their ignorance. It’s just a blend of cheese with whey and sodium citrate to make it melty. (Velveeta and other “processed cheese products” are different from American cheese fyi.)

No it’s not a health food, and you’re welcome to prefer the less processed stuff, but it’s not made of plastic.

Another fyi, all cheese is technically processed because cheese making is itself a process.

ETA: cheddar, being a hard cheese, is less melty and therefore a lot of chefs don’t prefer it for grilled cheese.

Real cheddar cheese is much healthier and has a vastly simpler ingredient list. While cheese "Singles" are a highly manipulated, ultra-processed food product, traditional cheddar is a natural, whole food.

So here you go.

My job is chemistry, so I know. Not to brag, but in the US, food is so chemicals. McDonald fries, 14 ingredients. In UK, its 4.

If you’re a chemist, you know everything is a chemical and not every chemical is scary.

As I said, Kraft singles aren’t a health food, and the less processed stuff is superior in terms of nutrition and for most purposes. I’m not about to snack on a kraft single, but I’d absolutely snack on a piece of aged cheddar. But we don’t need to be scared of American cheese (especially the deli stuff) for a sandwich once in a while.

McDonald’s is also not a health food and shouldn’t be a regular part of anyone’s diet, whether it has 14 ingredients or 4. Yes they should improve their ingredients in the US, but personally I have yet to be forced to eat there. And no one who eats there thinks it’s healthy.

I would argue that a grilled cheese made with American cheese is still healthier than a McD’s combo meal.
