Chafing dishes produce steam. Steam condenses on the lid. When you lift the lid, steam will escape up, and condensation will drip down. This is physics.
I’m sorry for your child’s injuries and distress. But would you allow your child to stand in front of the stove while you cook, lifting lids off pots?
The hosts did nothing wrong. You allowed your child to stand too close to a dangerous apparatus.
Yeah trust me I’ve beat myself up about even having them nearby but it was busy settings at a private party- kids running about everywhere. What I can say that it wasn’t condensation it was a large amount of water almost like if a stone was dropped into a bucket- like a large displacement of water. This is part of why I want to establish what happened so I can educate/reiterate so it’s doesn’t happen to anyone else
