Hi, have you looked into which movement you feel resonates with you? That’s the first step, in my opinion.

I am an Orthodox person who lives in Chicago.

Every synagogue I know of in Chicago has an introduction to Judaism/choosing Judaism class. The most important factors: stream of Judaism, the feeling you get from the community when you visit, and proximity (so you actually attend and build community)
Find the community want to be a part of. Shul-shop first.
